JK spends Rs 1000 Cr annually, 1.5 M likely to get lung cancer | Cigarettes consume Kashmir, Jammu | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 7: The smokers of Jammu Kashmir spend a whopping Rs 1000 Crores annually on purchase of cigarettes. According to former President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce, Shakeel Qalander the state Imports 260 million (26 crore) cigarettes every year. According to him, 190 million are consumed in Kashmir and 70 million in Jammu region. Apart from this, Qalander said, a whopping sum is spent on purchase of creude tobacco and tobacoo products. Qalander said two major tobacoo companies, Godfrey Philips and Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) sell cigarettes to Jammu and Kashmir. "The former has an annual turnover of around Rs 450 crore while the latter has Rs 350 crore in the state," he said. "besides Rs 300 crore is generated from crude tobacco products like Tambaku, Bidi, Naas etc". Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) has tallied that around 26.6% population of Jammu and Kashmir is using tobacco products, in one form or the other. It points out that Kashmir has 12% cigarette smokers, 3.8% bidi smokers and 8.0% smokeless tobacco users. According to the survey cigarette use in the state is 12% while in India it stands at 5.7%. The survey comes out with some horrifying findings. "Fifteen lakh people are likely to protract Cancer because of tobacco in the State and currently J&K State has been labelled as the lung cancer capital of India," it reads. A study conducted by SKIMS in 2012 found 5.9 percent female students and 30 males addicted," a noted doctor of SKIMS said. Psychaitrist, Dr Arshad Husain said tobacco is used to allay stress and traumatic times. He said in the west people use alcohol to overcome stress. |
