National Doctors' Day goes unnoticed in J&K | | | Nitesh Sangral
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 1: Barring a couple of small functions, the National Doctors' Day largely went unnoticed in J&K. Here in Jammu, only two departments of the GMC hospital celebrated the day while in Kashmir Valley, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) observed the day as a 'black day'. Official sources told Early Times that in Jammu, the Health department had not made any arrangement for the day. "There was no publicity and awareness campaign among the medical fraternity," a senior doctor of the GMC and hospital said, wishing anonymity. He said the higher ups should have done homework to observe the day in a befitting manner. However, the department of pathology of GMC hospital organized a discussion on the day and various issues were highlighted by junior doctors before the principal and the superintendent. Urology department at Super-Speciality Hospital (SSH), Jammu also organized a small program during which tributes were paid to Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy on his birth anniversary. Superintendent of SSH, Dr Romesh Gupta admitted that due to lack of awareness, hospital administration did not celebrate the day as it should have been. He said that next year the hospital would celebrate the day with enthusiasm. In Kashmir Valley, some doctors of hospitals under the banner of DAK wore black bands and held protest against the violence against the doctors in different places. Some doctors observed the day as a 'black day' to protest against the unjustified and illegal suspension of DAK president Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan. According to DAK spokesman, Dr Nisar was suspended in May 2014 for raising his voice against spurious drugs in which some higher ups were involved. "There is no reason to celebrate the doctors' day as we are even denied the right to express our free opinion," the DAK spokesman said. |
