Tourism promotion? Many years on, 8 major projects still incomplete | | | Arun Singh ET Report jammu, July 1: Work on some eight ambitious projects of Tourism department in the state is still incomplete because of official apathy. Sources told Early Times that the projects pertaining to tourism and culture are mainly fraught with the problems of poor quality of work in some projects, pendency of NOC from Forest/Wildlife departments, slow progress of work, time overrun and cost overrun, land acquisition issues, and non-accordance of administrative approvals to the schemes/projects. "The lethargic attitude of the Tourism department can be gauged from the fact that it did not submit action taken reports of four projects out of the eight projects sought by the government monitoring agency till date, showing their lack of interest towards the projects," said the sources. They said that Jammu Ropeway Project is the main casualty of the administrative apathy due to which the project has not seen the light of the day yet. Land acquisition/obtaining NOCs from Forest/ Wildlife departments are still pending. The total land identified for the ropeway project works out to about 73 kanals and 09 marl with financial implication of Rs 5.44 cr. Construction of golf course club building is also tangled in huge escalation in cost of the project. The project cost is likely to rise to Rs 60 crore for which the revised DPR is under preparation. The project is under execution for the last several years without appropriate funding resulting in escalation of cost. "Interestingly, a minimum amount of Rs 7.20 crore for the purpose is needed for the completion of 18 holes golf course and the club building, but the annual state plan of Director Tourism, Jammu is in the range of Rs 12 crore to Rs 15 crore which he has to expend across ten districts of Jammu division," said the sources. Similarly, Jammu golf course (18 holes) at Sidhra, reconstruction of gutted Pahalgam club building, Tourist Facilitation Centre, SPS Museum Srinagar, Convention Centre, Jammu, Convention Centre Leh and golf course club building Sidhra, Jammu are also facing the same fate of Tourism department's apathy. |
