We offer commission to get PWD works, says Rajouri contractor | | | A B Sharma
Early Times Report Rajouri, July 1: The high-handedness of the contractors and their suppliers which have been common place phenomenon in the erstwhile government has not changed in the new dispensation, but is being pursued vigorously and unabated at in all departments as well as in all districts of the state. Another such instance of the nexus between the two came to fore from District Rajouri, village Nala Makol where a two kilometers length road is being black-topped, the work being only executed just to see-off the ritual so that the government money meant for the purpose could be eaten out. Devender Kumar, the contractor on the job, when asked by a local of the village about the non-seriousness of the business executed by him by just doing the patch work and not putting in the required material to make the road motorable, came heavily upon him saying that the work assigned to him by the Divisional Engineer of the area was only after a handsome commission was offered to him. "We pay handsome commission to the divisional Engineer of PWD before getting the contract. Now it is upto us as to how we can execute the work with the leftover money," said Devender Kumar, the contractor. Divisional engineer Noushera Parvez Iqbal preferred not to pick the umpteen calls made to him and avoided the clarification on the matter. However Senior Engineer Rajouri Desraj when approached about the dishonesty being committed through the PWD-contractors nexus said that since the matter has been brought in his knowledge, he would initiate appropriate action and bring the culprits to the book. "I will personally look into the matter and any faulty procedure found in executing the work would be taken into immediate consideration," said SE Desraj. Mohammad Shokat Ali, Assistant Executive Engineer also confirmed to have received the directive from the senior engineer and while talking to Early Times said he would go on the spot and get the work stopped. "I too have received the complaint from our superior and I will visit the spot tomorrow to gauge the gravity of the situation. If any dereliction of the work would be found, the department would stop the payment to the contractor," assured Mohammad Shokat Ali, Assistant Executive Engineer. |
