BJP's Kashmir unit unhappy as party plays second fiddle | Leaders feel ignored, mull changing loyalties | | ET Report srinagar, July 1: Many BJP leaders in Kashmir are reportedly upset with the party high command and believe that they have been let down as none of the BJP leaders from Kashmir have been given any significant positions after the party joined hands with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and formed the government in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources told Early Times a prominent BJP woman leader, who contested the last year's assembly elections unsuccessfully, had lobbied hard to get appointed as the Chairperson of the State Women's Development Corporation (SWDC) but her efforts didn't bear any fruit as PDP appointed its media advisor and broadcaster turned politician Nayeema Mehjoor as the chairperson of the vital women body in Jammu and Kashmir. "BJP central leadership ignoring Kashmir based leaders are making most of them believe that they committed a mistake by joining the party and they should look for other options," said a source. A BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "We risked our lives and joined the BJP. Many of us even contested elections despite facing threats from militants and other anti-social elements. We left no stone unturned to ensure that message of the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaches to every nook and corner of the Valley, but in return we have got nothing and we are being treated shabbily." Sources said the PDP appointing its youth president Waheed-ur-Rehman Para as the political analyst in the Chief Minister's secretariat too has not gone well with the BJP. "A few BJP leaders have suggested that Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh should appoint a political leader as his advisor. A Kashmir based BJP leader is trying his best to convince the party high command that he should be deputed with the Deputy Chief Minister," said a source. He said, "Proposal has not impressed the Deputy Chief Minister as he (Nirmal Singh) doesn't want anyone to be his partner, whether a person is from Jammu or Kashmir region." A few leaders from Kashmir region, sources said, have already conveyed to the party high command that they are not happy with the treatment being meted out to them. "They (BJP leaders) are demanding that they should be rehabilitated," said a source. He said on Tuesday the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed nominated the Wakf board members and all of them are PDP loyalists. "If central leadership wanted to keep BJP leaders in Kashmir in good books it could have requested the Chief Minister to include a few Muslim BJP leaders as Wakf board members," the source added. A BJP leader said, "Our ministers and the people who are heading the party in the state have proved that they lack experience and they are acting as second fiddles in the government. If BJP leaders keep on ignoring the Kashmir unit it would prove disastrous for the party in coming days." He said that if the party wants to keep its Kashmir unit intact it would have to take some bold steps to accommodate the BJP leaders from Kashmir. "Otherwise the day is not far when people would change their loyalties and look for greener pastures," the leader added. |
