Sharif needs to create favourable atmosphere for talks | | | If one continues to be excited over the prospects of the proposed India-Pakistan dialogue, one may be wrong because Islamabad and its Army are yet to either suspend or abandon their assistance to militants for crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. What seems to be an irony of fate is that within less than 24 hours of the decision taken by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and his Pakistan counterpart,Nawaz Sharif, on resumption of bilateral talks militants, having full backing from the Pakistani Army, made a fresh bid for infiltrating into the Kahsmir valley from across Kupwara sector on Sunday.According to reports, the Indian troops, guarding the LOC, foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control in north Kashmir's frontier Kupwara district , killing three unidentified militant .The gunfight started around midnight near Ustad post in Keran sector, nearly 130 km north-west of Srinagar, when a group of militants was trying to sneak into this side from Pakistan side. The group was trying to take advantage of the bad weather condition in the area as it tried to cut the fence. They were challenged and in the ensuing gunfight, three militants were killed. The bodies of three militants have been recovered. That the militants were not entering into Kashmir for holidaying which is evident from the fact that large quantities of weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. The Army has claimed to have recovered three AK rifles, 12 magazines, and one UBGL from "war-like" stores from the encounter site. This clearly indicates that these militants were pushed into Kashmir for raising the level of violence in order to force New Delhi to resume talks for the settlement of the Kashmir issue.Reports also indicated that Pakistan itself has been tormented by the activities of terrorists of various hues and authorities and the Government agencies besides the extremists try to push some of these terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir which could ease security scenario in Pakistan. The Army has foiled six infiltration bids in Kashmir during the last six months in which 15 militants and four soldiers have been killed in these gunfights. There are some disturbing trends emerging in Kashmir. The way angry protesters attacked the cavalcade of one PDP member Parliament in south Kashmir poses new challenges to the security forces. One of the cars in the cavalcade was set on fire and the police had to use teargas shells and resort to lathicharge to save the MP from being lynched by the mob that was protesting against violating their order under which no pro-India function had to be held within the school premises. If this incident is not enough to indicate new disturbing trends the way a group of people torched a police vehicle in Baramulla Now that India has accepted Pakistan's repeated pleas for the resumption of bilateral dialogue it is time for Islamabad to issue fresh directions to the Army and the R angers to ensure that not a single guntoting youth or militant was able to cross into the Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir. It is time for Islamabad to encourage New Delhi on resuming sustained and result oriented dialogue which could be possible if Pakistan shuts all the training camps where militants have been imparted training in the handling of the sophisticated weapons.Pakistan has to convince India that the establishment in Islamabad was doing all that could be possible for stopping use of Pak territory for exporting terror to India.Once India is convinced on the changed role of Pakistan, the former would move two steps for sustaining the process of dialogue.Already Modi has come in for sharp criticism from the opposition for agreeing to resume bilateral talks with Pakistan and it is the job of the Nawaz Sharif to prove the opposition parties in India wrong. |
