SRINAGAR, July 13: Authorities imposed restrictions in downtown Srinagar and Maisuma area in order to foil the joint rally of separatists to be carried out in connection with the observance of Martyrs Day. Life remained normal in the other areas of Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley.
Separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had announced that they would carry out a rally from Jamia Masjid to the Martyrs Graveyard located inside the shrine of Naqshbandh Sahib at Khawaja Bazar in the Nowhatta locality of downtown Srinagar.
However, the programme was foiled due to the house arrest of Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik at their respective residences at Hyderpora, Nigeen and Maisuma. At the same time since the restrictions were imposed in the downtown areas not many people turned up to pay tributes to the people who offered sacrifices while fighting against the autocratic rule.
Since early morning hundreds of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel donning riot gear appeared in localities of different areas of downtown Srinagar and enforced restrictions. The police and CRPF personnel directed the residents of these areas to remain indoors since undeclared curfew was put in place. Restrictions were imposed in areas coming under police stations of Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Kralkhud and Maisuma.
Enforcement of the restrictions virtually crippled the life in downtown Srinagar. People faced difficulties in getting the essentials of life as the restrictions were in force. In most of the mosques including Jamia Masjid the prayers were not allowed and as such the people had to offer prayers at their respective homes. As the separatists had not given any call for strike today the life was almost normal in the uptown areas of the Srinagar city and other districts as well. Both the public and private plied normally on the roads. Shops and other commercial establishments remained open in these areas with some private banks also operating. It was after 25 years that no strike was observed on July 13.
Some of the leaders of the parallel factions of Hurriyat Conference tried to break free the cordon and reach the Martyrs Graveyard. However, these leaders were arrested by police and lodged in nearby police stations. While as separatists Javed Ahmad Mir and Engineer Hilal Ahmad War were arrested from the Maisuma locality some of the leaders and activists of Hurriyat Conference led by Geelani were arrested in the Shaheed Gunj area. Separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was arrested along with his supporters when he tried to carry out a procession in the Sanat Nagar area in uptown Srinagar. Meanwhile, protests broke out in Maisuma locality in the evening between a group of youth and security forces personnel. As the police and CRPF personnel were returning after performing their duties a group of youth appeared and pelted stones on them. This was retaliated by the lobbing of smoke shells by security forces personnel.
