Amarnath Yatra remains suspended on second day due to bad weather

Srinagar, July 13: The annual Amarnath Yatra remained suspended for the second day today as no pilgrim was allowed to proceed towards Kashmir following incessant rains and Close of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. According to officials Yatris who reached from different parts of the country were asked to stay at Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas because of bad weather condition along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway due to landslides triggered by heavy rains.
In Kashmir no pilgrim was allowed to move towards the Amarnath cave shrine from either the north Kashmir Baltal camp or the south Kashmir Nunwan Pahalgam base camps either on Sunday and Monday. Officials said that heavy rains are lashing the mountainous tracks on both sides of the cave and Yatris will be allowed to move for Darshan only after situation is reviewed and added that no yatri is stranded anywhere along the track on both sides and all Yatris who had reached here are lodged at safe places inside the two base camps and at transit camps.
Following closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, authorities today diverted the transport carrying Yatris through historical Mughal road amid tigh security arrangements from Srinagar to Rajouri and Poonch areas.
Vehicles carrying Yatris were allowed to move from Srinagar to Rajouri early in the morning and from evening at 4 Pm Vehicles carrying Yatris were allowed to move from Rajouri and Jammu areas to Kashmir through Mughal road.
Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus Monday said that the light rainfall will continue till evening. However, he refused to comment on any possible threat of floods and added that nothing can be said regarding that floods as of now. According to official accounts so far arround 1, 31, 706 Yatris paid obeisance at Cave and on Saturday when last batch of Yatris was allowed to move towards Cave were 2,900 pilgrims, including 500 women, left Nunwan Pahalgam base camp early morning for their next halting station Chandanwari which is connected by a road and also pilgrims, who had night halt at different halting stations on the traditional route were also allowed to start their journey towards the Holy cave.
Similarly, around 5,000 yatris, including 1,250 women and 43 children besides 11 sadhus as well also left Baltal base camp for the holy Cave shrine and majority of yatris were expected to safely reach to destination after covering an area of 16-km-long track.
However according to officials concerned all Yatris who paid obeisance at cave till Saturday reached back safely to their base camps and after no fresh batch of Yatris were allowed to move towards Holy Cave following incessant rains in upper reaches of Kashmir from last two days.
