Candidates who performed well, have firm political footing likely to join party | "Congress' new pot-shot : Roping in independents, BJP dissidents | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 13: Independent candidates who performed well in Assembly elections and nearly missed the mark of victory and the dissidents in BJP who could not get the ticket from party to contest elections notwithstanding their firm political ground are exploring new political arenas. With their political careers at stake , leaders in both the groupings are in touch with the Congress leadership and are likely to join the party anytime soon at appropriate time. State Congress leadership is also trying to rope in such people who could become dark horses in elections next time for the party, many of the senior leaders having become a liability for 'perpetual' defeats at the hustings. Sources within the party said the leadership is actively pursuing the idea of roping in those candidates who either contested as independents and lost by a narrow margin in some constituencies in Jammu in the Assembly polls. Besides there are many dissidents within the ruling BJP who for one or the other reason could not get tickets despite being strong contenders are also the ones who are preparing their grounds for political platform change over , sources said adding that they feel their political career is at stake as the incumbent MLAs are mostly ministers and have no reason to get replaced by the BJP leadership in time to come. The constituencies from where the Congress leadership is considering to rope in the independents who were at number two or the strong contenders in BJP range from diverse areas within Jammu region. From Reasi on one side to Bani and Bishnah on the other end, there are candidates who are likely to join Congress , sources said. They are constantly in touch with PCC chief GA Mir besides a couple of senior leaders on whom Mir has entrusted responsibility of identifying the 'right' people are engaged in productive deliberations with them, sources said adding that once they come in Congress fold they would be given open field for 'grooming' up their respective political grounds in favour of the party. Mohinder Bhardwaj, Saraf Singh and Ajay Nanda who have clout in their respective areas are the ones to name few who can come within Congress fold, sources said. On the other hand in what could be seen as the Congress leadership now learning lessons , it is open to embrace the new yet dynamic faces in various constituencies rather than depending solely on the so called senior yet 'unsuccessful and unfruitful' leaders in terms of their consecutive defeats at the elections, sources further said. "These leaders are akin to deadwood in the party , no matter their association with Congress is age old…..ultimately it is the electoral success that matters for any party and is counted for any leader", said a Congress leader while confiding that fate of many such big names stands almost sealed as for chance to get tickets for contesting polls. There are leaders like RS Chib, GS Charak, Thakur Hari Singh, Dharampal Sharma, who have not performed well in terms of electoral success. Even the leaders like Tara Chand, Raman Bhalla who would boast of bathing in waves of popularity in recent past have miserably failed to fetch any gains despite popularity tag, said the leader adding that few of them have forfeited their securities at elections which is a cause of concern for the Congress leadership in the wake of the fact that party is in opposition for now. However, they will be given some meaningful organizational roles in future, he added.
