Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 14: In what can prove to a major embarrassment to the PDP-BJP alliance government on Independence Day , the MLAs of both the allies have decided to boycott the official level functions to be held at district levels across the state. The MLAs have been offended by the government order issued two days back in which it was specified that SDMs will unfurl tricolour at tehsil levels on Independence Day . However, the decision has backfired and offended the MLAs as this will be deviation from the past practice of letting elected MLAs unfurl the tricolour.
Sources said this order has left a number of MLAs angry in both PDP as well as BJP most of whom are first time public representatives and were enthusiastic about the participation at the official functions in their constituencies. Sources said there is a reason why government took this decision and issued a formal order. It was conveyed to MLAs that their presence is must at district level official functions where ministers would hoist the national flag and take salute of march as chief guests. The government desired that MLAs presence along with their supporters at the district level functions would give some weight and colour to these functions, sources said, adding that at tehsil levels the official functions do not get visible and are relatively on a small scale.
However, this has not augured well with the MLAs, sources said adding that it has offended a couple of MLAs who have got the invitation cards for their respective constituencies printed and even sent for distribution. On such case is of MLA from Kokernag, sources said adding that they are finding reversing the past practice humiliating.
The government order has angered the MLAs of ruling PDP in Kashmir Valley on one hand, in Jammu region which has sizable number of MLAs of BJP, has offended them as this was the first time they would have hoisted national flag in the official function which is a privilege. Sources said after this order was issued, the MLAs of both the parties went into huddles and as mutually accepted step decided not to attend the district level functions, leave alone bringing their supporters to these venues. This may prove out to be embarrassment for the government, sources added.
