Second list of corrupt officials gathers dust | SAC punishes none in 12 yrs, awaits revival | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Tall promises of the present regime to curb corruption have fallen flat and lost the sheen as the second list of corrupt officials which reportedly was finalized by the investigating agencies has not been made public till date, and no effort is being reportedly put to revive the State Accountability Commission (SAC), which has failed to punish a single politician in the past 12-years. Sources told Early Times, the panel led by the Chief Secretary which was scheduled to meet last month to give its final nod to the list of more than sixty corrupt officials has not met so far and on the other hand no headway has been made to appoint the Chairman of the SAC and its other members. "Investigating agencies have worked very hard to ascertain the details of the benami properties of the corrupt officials and have framed water tight cases against the officials who have amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income," they added. Sources claimed that a few ministers are trying their best to push the issue under the carpet and are misleading the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who is spearheading the war against corruption. On the other hand no progress has been made to revive the State Accountability Commission (SAC) which has turned out to be a mere toothless tiger. The commission was constituted in 2003 with late Justice (retd) R.P. Sethi as its first chairman. It was expected that the SAC would not spare the corrupt officials and politicians. However, the SAC has not punished a single tainted minister since its inception, with the inaction of the past regimes emboldening the corrupt. As people had pinned hopes that the SAC would make the powerful accountable before the law, making the commission powerless has once again vindicated the old saying that "ministers can never be punished, not now, not then". Now, when the new government is claiming that new SAC chairman and members would be appointed soon, the people are watching whether the resurrected SAC would be any different from the earlier one. It remains to be seen whether action would be taken against tainted to make the state corrupt free or the commission would once again be rendered as a powerless house wherein only files would pile up. When contacted the R&B Minister Altaf Bukhari while talking to Early Times said: "We are reconstituting the SAC and it would be made functional within 30-days." |
