Terror and talk will go together

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 14: Gone are the days when Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any senior BJP leader would denounce Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his July 16, 2009 Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt) wrong or for the India-Pakistan joint statement that terror and talks would go side by side and call the joint statement a national shame. Narendra Modi, or for that matter the entire BJP leadership, today is a completely changed stuff. It has done a complete U-turn and decided to pursue the Manmohan Singh line overlooking the fact that Islamabad under Mian Nawaz Sharif has been bleeding Indian nation with a thousand-cut on a daily basis and has also intensified its break-India and snatch-Jammu & Kashmir-from-India activities.
It is hardly necessary to catalogue here what happened in Jammu & Kashmir and other parts of India after Narendra Modi took over as the country's Prime Minister, as everyone in the state is aware of the ongoing orgy of death and destruction in Jammu & Kashmir. Suffice to say that the security environment in the state has assumed alarming proportions and not one but many Army Commanders who are charged with the responsibility of defending the borders and Line of Control have candidly acknowledged that things in the state have deteriorated and Pakistan has been leaving no stone unturned to cause damage to India to the maximum possible extent. As late as on Thursday, the General Officer Commanding (GoC) Lt General Subrata Saha admitted on the sidelines of a function at Cheshmashahi garden, Srinagar, that infiltration attempts have increased this year as compared to last year. "Infiltration attempts have increased this year as compared to last year. One reason could be less snowfall levels. We are ensuring that the militants get eliminated on the LoC. So far, 11 bids are made and all of them were foiled in which some 19 militants were killed," he, among other things, said.
The point is that the Narendra Modi Government is shamelessly kneeling and bringing a bad name to the Indian nation by causing an affront to its self-respect. It has gone back on its commitment that it would not talk to Pakistan unless it dismantled terror training camps within Pakistan and in POJK and stopped exporting terrorism to India. It shocked the nation on July 10, when PM Modi met with his Pakistan counterpart Mian Nawaz Sharif at the Russian city of Ufa and agreed to start dialogue with Pakistan. As per the Ufa understanding between the Prime Ministers of two nations, National Security Advisors of the two countries were to meet shortly to start the stalled dialogue process and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Pakistani National Security advisor Sartaj Aziz would meet from two days in New Delhi on August 23 and 24. It was on Thursday that Aziz confirmed that he will be visiting India on August 23 and 24 and take up with his Indian counterpart all the outstanding issues between the two nations, including the issue of Kashmir. Most of our strategic affairs experts have questioned the Government of India's policy towards Pakistan and have expressed the view that PM Modi's foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan is not what it should have been considering the evil intentions of Pakistan. "Nothing will come out of the scheduled meeting," they opined, and added that the intervening period should be used to put pressure on Narendra Modi so that his Government could be prevented from committing a "diplomatic blunder on the negotiating table".
It would be only proper to refer to two events which took place on Friday, one each in Delhi and Srinagar. In Delhi, the provocative and emboldened Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit declared on the Pakistan Independence Day that Pakistan will continue to rake up Kashmir issue and that Islamabad would also continue to extend political, diplomatic and moral support to the Kashmiri cause. He also saluted the people of Kashmir for their role in the ongoing "freedom struggle" in Kashmir and also demanded for them the right to self-determination. In Srinagar, Dukhtran-i-Millat chief, along with scores of Kashmiri women, hoisted the Pakistani flag to express their solidarity with Pakistan.
What did the BJP say in July 2009, when PM Manmohan Singh knelt and accepted the suggestions of Yousuf Raza Gilani that talks and terror could go side by side and that there was Indian involvement in the subversive activities in Baluchistan? On July 29, 2009, the BJP had launched a frontal assault on the Manmohan Singh Government for compromising on India's stated position on Pakistan in the Sharm-el-Sheikh joint statement and said the "waters of the seven seas will not be able to wash the shame" brought on the country through this flawed initiative. "The distinction between the aggressor (Pakistan) and the victim(India) has been completely obliterated," BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, also a former external affairs minister, had said while alluding to a line in the joint statement that said both countries recognized terrorism as the "chief threat".
Sinha also exposed what he called "a complete turnaround" in the Government's position on terrorism emanating from Pakistan in less than a month from Manmohan Singh's meeting with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in Yekaterinburg on June 16 and his meeting with Gilani on July 16. Besides, Sinha had also attacked the Manmohan Singh Government for including a reference to Baluchistan in the joint statement that had emboldened Pakistani leaders to accuse India of involvement in fomenting insurgency in the region. "Why was Baluchistan included in a bilateral document? No sooner was the ink dry on the joint statement, Pakistani leaders were accusing India of supporting insurgency in Baluchistan?" he had said.
All this should establish that it was not the BJP the Indian nation voted for. It's a different BJP. It is the replica of the Sonia Congress. Manmohan Singh under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi shamed India and Narendra Modi under the influence of Nagpur is also shaming India and undermining Indian sovereignty by yielding to the Pakistani tactics and its aggressive and coercive foreign policy.
