| PDP opposing Gill as JK Governor embarrasses BJP | | Hasty moves expose ‘inexperienced leadership’ | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 14: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opposing the appointment of former top police officer P S Gill as the new Governor of Jammu and Kashmir has reportedly left the BJP leaders in JK red faced, sources told Early Times.
They said the BJP leaders had lobbied hard to project P S Gill as the new Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. "The BJP leaders had convinced the party high command that Gill is the right choice for the top post. They had even told the party high command that PDP leadership won't have any objection vis-à-vis Gill's appointment as JK Governor," the sources added.
They said, soon after the PDP leaders came to know that BJP has almost finalized the appointment of P S Gill as the new Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, they reacted sharply and informed the BJP central leadership to go slow with the proposal. "PDP leaders expressed dismay over the fact that state BJP unit had not considered it necessary to discuss the name of P S Gill with their coalition partner and had provided the wrong feedback to the BJP high command to appoint Gill as the new Governor of JK," the source added.
They claimed that Prime Minister's Office (PMO) had almost cleared Gill's name and it was awaiting the nod from the Defence Ministry. "PDP opposing the appointment of P S Gill as the new Governor of JK has put the BJP leaders in tight spot. The BJP high command has sought explanation from the state BJP leaders about how they went ahead with the proposal without taking their coalition partner into confidence," the sources added.
They said, "PDP leaders informed the BJP high command that PS Gill is very close to the National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and he serving in Kashmir should not be the only criteria to hold the top post in the sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir."
"BJP leaders wanted to get P S Gill appointed in a hurry to prove a point to the people and their critics that they are not second fiddles in the Government and they can take independent decisions. However, their move has backfired leaving them (BJP leaders) embarrassed," sources added.
Insiders revealed that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has informed the BJP central leadership that if Delhi is keen on changing the JK Governor then a panel comprising BJP and PDP leaders should be formed to scrutinize the names of the probable candidates. "It's surprising that BJP leaders are trying to jump the gun just to satiate their ego," he added.
Sources said that BJP leaders raked up the issue of appointing new Governor to divert the attention of the people from the real issues and their failure to live up to the expectations of masses. "The proposal to appoint PS Gill as the new Governor of JK was moved when agitation to seek full-fledged AIIMS for Jammu region was at peak. The hurry shown by the BJP leaders has raised many questions but for time being Gill's appointment as JK's new Governor has been stalled," they added. |
