Cabinet to decide Iqbal Khanday's fate | | | Abdul Majid Early Times Report srinagar, Aug 26: Day after Chief Secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khanday announced that he was seeking voluntary retirement, the Government has decided to refer the matter to the cabinet which would take a final call. The General Administration Department forwarded Khanday's file to the Chief Minister's office, and the issue has become a major embarrassment for Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Khanday was seen as very close to him. Khanday's relation with the PDP-BJP coalition Government turned ugly since May after he was treated like a "stenographer," sources said. Ahead of the August 21 cabinet meeting, Khanday was hopeful that the Government would take him into confidence before ordering transfers in the administration. "But while BJP was already up in arms against him, the last nail in the coffin proved the decision of PDP ministers who, in consultation with an MP, resolved that Khanday is no holy cow and nowhere above the Agenda of Alliance," the sources said. They said Khanday to his utter shock got a cold response from the PDP. This is despite the fact that he has often been seen as the man who strengthened the party. Member Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Beigh is on record having said that Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu was introduced to him by none other than Khanday. On the other hand, some of the opposition National Conference leaders, bereft of any agenda, have started celebrating the ouster of Khanday. "Khanday was instrumental in the downfall of NC as he deliberately mismanaged flood crisis to damage our image," said a NC leader, asking not to be identified. NC president Omar Abdullah, however, is understood to have asked his party people not to issue any statement on the Khanday retirement controversy. According to an NC spokesperson, "Omar Sahib never gauges official by his political affiliation but by his work. Same holds true for Khanday Sahib. He could have had political interests but Omar Sahib neglected it in the interest of the administration." The spokesman, however, declined to comment over Khanday's role during the flood crisis. |
