Veteran Congress leader dies at 79 | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sep 13: Vetran Congress leader and former Member Parliament Janak Raj Gupta today passed away here after a brief illness. He was 79. Gupta was under observation in the ICU in the hospital here after he fell ill last night but this morning breathed his last. He had a distinguished career as a Congressman. He was very popular in social circles for his secular credentials. He is survived by wife, son and a daughter. Gupta in 1969 for the first time was inducted as MLC, in 1977 and 1983, he was elected as MLA from R S Pura constituency. In the year 1984 and 1989, Gupta remained as Lok Sabha MP from Jammu-Poonch Constituency. He also remained Deputy Speaker of J&K Assembly and in 2006 as political advisor to the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. On hearing the sad news former CM and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad cut short his Srinagar visit to join the mourners at Jammu. Gupta will be cremated tomorrow at 1600 hrs at Jammu. |
