Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 13: Three leaders of Hurriyat Conference Jammu & Kashmir (HCJK) this week joined the Hurriyat (G) of Syed Ali Geelani. These self-styled freedom fighters were Shabir Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Agha Syed Hassan. This development has led the pro-separatists and pro-Pakistan elements in the Valley to believe that this would benefit the separatist camp or the amalgam Hurriyat Conference whose members due to differences had been breaking apart from the single unit. "Unity is undoubtedly strength. But whether the unity will survive and sustain and prove union of minds or will prove a marriage of convenience is to be seen," those emboldened by this development have said.
The Hurriyat Conference was founded on March 8, 1993 under the banner All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and it suffered many splits. It suffered first split in 2003 and Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who at present is 85 years old, led the breakaway faction, known as Tehrik-e-Hurriyat. The other faction of Hurriyat Conference (M) is led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, son of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq, who was killed in 1990 by militants. The third faction of Hurriyat Conference, called Hurriyat Conference Jammu & Kashmir, came into being in 2014 and it was led by Shabir Shah. It is this camp that merged with Hurriyat Conference (G) a few days ago. Shah was part of the amalgam led by Mirwaiz.
Those impressed by this development have said: "While divided, Hurriyat (Conference) found it difficult to represent Kashmir issue in strong terms. It looks that the divided leadership is fighting a war of words with each faction claiming to be the real representative of people. That creates confusion among people, divides their sympathies and gives a severe beating to the cause Hurriyat represents. The leadership should have made people understand the right to self-determination but it has ended up in telling people which of the three factions represents them in reality. Moreover, the three factions cocoon themselves into calling for election boycotts and shutdowns, mainly in the Kashmir valley. This kind of politics has been happening for years, making it routine and ineffective. The best option to resolve Kashmir issue is to think beyond Srinagar and take into confidence the other communities. Besides, a united Hurriyat needs to ensure that India accepts it as a party to Kashmir issue. This is the age of knowledge; age of battle of wits. The two Hurriyat factions should make not only Indian people but the world understand the Kashmir case. By doing so, the world would take interest in the Kashmir case, and will change its perception about Kashmiris. That is possible only when the united Hurriyat leaders ensure a union of their minds. But if they just come together for convenience and engage in a credit-taking-game, it will be a case of one step forward, two steps backward".
The view of the pro-Pakistan outfit, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, that the unity among the separatists would go a long way in achieving right to self-determination for the people of Jammu & Kashmir is as untenable as it is ill-conceived and ill-designed. They have overlooked the facts that the State has - apart from Kashmir - two other regions of Jammu and Ladakh, which constitute over 85 per cent of the Jammu & Kashmir territories, that the population of these two regions is more than that of Kashmir and that an overwhelming majority of population in Jammu province and Ladakh region is intensely pro-India, anti-Pakistan, anti-autonomy, anti-self-rule, anti-azadi and so on. They have also overlooked the fact that none of the Hurriyat leaders has any say or any foothold either in Jammu province or Ladakh region. So much so, no Hurriyat leaders could dare to organize any anti-India event in these two nationalist regions of the State. Besides, they have also withheld the truth that Kashmiri Muslims are not a homogeneous group and that there are lakhs and lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus who are there to deflate and puncture the Hurriyat movement. In fact, these Hindus have been working for the division of Kashmir and creation of a separate homeland for themselves, saying they will not accept anything short of Panun Kashmir (Apna Kashmir). As for Kashmiri Muslims are concerned, they are divided into several sects and almost all the non-Sunni sects are opposed to the Sunni leadership which is involved in the separatist movement. Take, for example, the Shiite Muslims. They are against Pakistan and, hence, they are also against the Sunni leadership in Kashmir. Leave aside a few disgruntled elements in the community here and there.
So, the unity among the Kashmiri separatists hardly matter, as a very vast majority in the State represents India in the Indian Jammu & Kashmir.
