Batmaloo bus stand; A perfect example of official neglect, shopkeepers suffer | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sep 13: Due to the apathy from the people at helm around 300 shopkeepers running their business in the Batmaloo General Bus Stand are losing their clientele like anything and that too at a rapid pace. A group of shopkeepers while narrating their tale told Early Times that few hours of rainfall virtually leads to complete water logging of the Batmaloo bus stand thus affecting their business. The shopkeepers said that they raised this issue many a times with the concerned officials but of no use. "The stretch of the Batmaloo General Bus Stand right from the Meerak Shah Sumo stand to the police post presents the picture of a lake as and when rains arrive. The whole area gets submerged and it gets difficult for the people to move around. In such a situation it becomes impossible for the people to reach our shops," said the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers said that the trench dug up near the office of Labour Commissioner has turned defunct and no effort whatsoever has been taken to carry out the repairs of the trench. They said the failure of trench leads to a situation where the sewage could be seen flowing on the main road thus causing foul smell as well. "Simple repairs to the trench would have solved the problems, but that was not to be. Nobody from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation or any government department has so far turned up to set the things right. This bus stand has turned into a slum and it no longer looks like the Batmaloo bus stand of yesteryears," said the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers said that since the drainage system is absent at the bus stand there is no outlet for the water that gets accumulated due to one reason or the other. We shot many letters to the concerned officials so that there is solution to our problems but they continue to be there, said the shopkeepers. "The bus stand has turned into a garbage site with garbage being dumped by the people of the nearby areas. Since no action has been taken against the people dumping the garbage they continue to carry on with the practice. At the same time no step whatsoever has been taken to lift the garbage from this bus stand," said the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers said that the accumulated water enters their shops and damages the merchandise resulting in huge losses to them. They demanded that SMC should take proper note of their problems so that some plan of action is carved out and the solution is found out. |
