Upper reaches have fresh snowfall, night temp improves | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 27: The upper reaches in the Kashmir valley, including famed health resort of Pahalgam received fresh snowfall while barring at ski resort of Gulmarg the minimum temperature witnessed considerable improvement though day was cloudy and chilly. There was also major improvement in the minimum temperature at Leh where fresh snowfall was recorded early this morning. A MeT department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. People woke up to cloudy and chilly morning in the valley after there was major improvement in the night temperature barring in Gulmarg where it witnessed further drop. The minimum temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded more than two notches improvement due to cloudy weather during the night. Against yesterdays, minus 3.2 degree, it was minus 0.9 degree, more than a notch above normal. However, bone chilling winds continued in the city, where the coldest of the winter so far was recorded minus 5.6 degree on December 21. Spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 8 degree and minus 1 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. The city witnessed 5 degree, four notches below normal maximum temperature yesterday when a shut down was observed. However, life returned to normal today though majority people remained indoor due to Sunday because of cold winds. Mercury witnessed further drop and settled at minus 7.6 degree minimum temperature at famed ski resort of Gulmarg, where it minus 5.7 degree yesterday. So far coldest was recorded on December 24 at minus 12.5 degree. The sky was under dark black clouds, a hotel owner told over phone from Gulmarg, a major tourist attraction. Gulmarg recorded 0.5 degree maximum temperature, more than two degree below normal yesterday. Pahalgam, world famous health resort, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir received fresh snowfall and roof and tree tops besides roads and open field had turned white as people woke up this morning. However, there was improvement in the minimum temperature after the day temperature was 4 degree below normal yesterday. Against yesterdays minus 4.4 degree, it was minus 1.9 degree, more than three notches above normal. The upper reaches, including holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery, Panjterni, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on traditional Amarnath yatra route received light to heavy snowfall since last night. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, Kokernag a tourist resort in south and Kupwara in north also recorded two to three degree improvement in the minimum temperature. However, the day temperature yesterday was three to five degree below normal due to cloudy weather. Ladakh region also recorded improvement in the minimum temperature after fresh snowfall. At Leh where tree and roof tops witnessed fresh snowfall early this morning, the minimum temperature was minus 4.7 degree against yesterdays minus 10.1 degree. Spokesman said the sky would be mainly clear and maximum and minimum temperatures would be around minus 1 degree and minus 10 degree at Leh respectively during the next 24 hours. At Jammu, the winter capital, from where the state government is functioning, the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 degree and 5 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. |
