Omar Abdullah unnerved as PDP makes inroads into Beerwah | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 27: Former Chief Minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah is unnerved as Peoples Democratic Party has started making inroads into Beerwah constituency which is currently represented by him. Omar has pledged for a counter-strategy to "defeat the PDP designs of infiltrating into his stronghold". Though Beerwah had proved the last hope for Omar, who couldn't retain his Sonawar constituency seat in Srinagar in the 2014 elections, things have started turning hostile for him in the central Kashmir constituency of Budgam, where the PDP has fielded its young faces led by Waheed Ur Rehman Parra to "weed out" National Conference. For the last around a fortnight Parra and other PDP leaders including Arif Lagroo are seen visiting the Beerwah constituency in a bid to strengthen its roots in the area. Insiders said PDP initiated the move to tell the people that not Omar Abdullah but actually Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was working for development of the area. Parra while addressing rallies in Khag and Beerwah took a direct dig at Omar Abdullah. "Mis-governance and corruption was endemic during Omar's tenure as Chief Minister of the state," Parra said. "We are filling the gap that NC led government created during its tenure by ignoring the youth, creating anti youth policies and neglected them from participating in political decisions," he added. Parra emphasized on Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's initiatives of building roads, education transformation, sports activities, health care and many other initiatives taken by the government would benefit Beerwah not because of Omar. The issue of "PDP infiltration into NC stronghold" is already trending on social networks with many saying that Omar is fast losing his "last hope." Actually it was a post by tech-savvy Omar Abdullah, on his Facebook page, which triggered the debate leaving him unnerved. On December 19, Omar posted scores of pictures on his official page with title: "Three functions in the constituency." The pictures were about his concern for development in the Beerwah even as one picture showed his having donated an ambulance to the area out of the Constituency Development Fund. But instead of appreciation there was more of ridicule in the comments. Many commented with hashtag "#PDPPenetratesInNCHope." "PDP has penetrated into your last hope. You are losing Beerwah within a year? Which place will you try next?" commented one Sameer Ali though many such comments subsequently "disappeared". Sources said this all has started giving sleepless nights to Omar who has been holding marathon meetings to devise a counter-strategy. Sources said one of the meetings, which was attended by his team, comprising Aga Ruhulla, Junaid Mattu, Tanvir Sadiq and others stretched to late night hours as the party kept discussing strategies. Omar is understood to have asked his team to "defeat the PDP designs at any cost." Insiders said the NC plans to hold weekly rallies in the constituency. "It is a do or die situation for us and we need to retain Beerwah at any cost," said a party leader from Beerwah. Sources said NC will depute some of the party leaders to retain Beerwah. Despite repeated attempts, Omar Abdullah could not be contacted for comments. |
