Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 27: Immediately after the conclusion of the annual district drama competition by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages for Jammu district and the announcement of the awards thereof, the academy has been caught on wrong foot for many alleged manipulations.
Responding to a media query over the fabrications done in the judgment to appease particular groups and actors, one of the judge, padamshri Moti Lal Kemu has put the onus on the Academy.
"I do not know about the results. You ask the academy for that," was his reply to media queries.
The controversy still live with no official statement coming from Academy on the Judge's allegation, it has been further accused for rigging the entire theatre competition in which the Academy is alleged to have adjusted a blue eyed female participant namely Barkha Thakur from Pouni , district Reasi for awarding her the second best actress in the competition.
Barkha who belongs to Pouni has in July this year participated in the Reasi district drama competition and bagged best female actor award for the play Jailey De Qaidi produced by Sangam theater Group Reasi.
She was roped in by a Jammu group also for participation in Jammu district competition, allegedly in Academy's connivance, and was awarded second best female actor for Mohan Singh's play Dana Socho te Sahi . Akram Khan of Sangam Theater Group confirmed her as same Barkha who had received best actor female in his play in Reasi.
As per the State Academy rules for the district drama competition in which money and awards go to the competing groups, an artist of one district cannot participate in the other district competition, which amounts to breaching the Academy rules calling for cancellation of the entire competition.
"Yes, no artist participating in one district can participate in other district theatre competition as per Academy rules for district drama competition. If such thing has happened, it calls for initiating an immediate action and reconsidering the decisions," said JKAACL additional secretary Arvinder Singh Amn while responding to media query.
The academy in its press release on awards list had allegedly wrongly spelt Barkha Thakur as Barkita Thaur to conceal her name.
Aziz Hajini , the secretary of the Academy had a day earlier while talking to to section of media had said that it was quite unfortunate that Padamshri Kemu had come up with such a statement that has demeaned the whole artistic fraternity of the state.
"This is very unfortunate that he has given such statement charging the academy, but if any of the employee of the Academy would be found indulged in any kind of malpractice, I would immediately call for his expulsion from the Academy," he said.
Hajini however said that he would come up with an immediate order for cancellation of the competition in the future and instead replace the activity with festival in which no awards would be there.
Kusum Tickoo, the senior theatre stage artist expressed the shock over the Jammu district drama festival rigging said, " Since the chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed is the president of the prestigious institution, his immediate intervention is needed to cleanse the Academy of all filth".
She said if Academy does not takes immediate cancellation of the awards, most of the groups having participated in the competition would reach the chief minister with a memorandum to close down the theatrical activities in the state.
Neha Lahotra , another senior theatre activist of the state alleged that it is not only the Barkha Thakur or Moti Kemu's case that has opened the lid on Pandora's box, almost all employees and their relatives of the state academy are indulged in the malpractice on the name of theatre while denying the genuine amateur NGOs.
"If this competition is not termed null and void, we artists will come up with documentary proofs which contain Academy employees' infringement in theatre funding at state and even at national level," she said.
Many other theatre groups have joined in crusade to call a press conference if Academy fails to deliver its verdict of cancellation of the results of recently held theatre festival.
