Water pipeline in Chadoora: Approved by NC govt, Omar calls it anti-people | | | Early Times Report
Budgam, Dec 27 : The clashes and protests over laying of pipeline for new water supply scheme in Chadoora is taking an ugly turn. People from upper areas of Chadoora are against this project as they feel this would decrease water level in Doodh Ganga nullah which will affect the local agriculture. Villagers from several areas are seen on the roads since last several days demanding closure of this project . The opposition National Conference which actually had okayed this project few years back is taking undue advantage of this agitation. It was during the time of National Conference lead Government when the 43 crore Nowhar - Kralpora water supply project was cleared , but now sensing trouble the National Conference is using a different tune calling this project anti people. Few days ago Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura who is also the local MLA had directed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) , Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), which is the executing agency for laying of 600 MM Di-Pipe for Transmission of Raw Water from Higher Reaches of Doodhganga Nullah to Kralpora Water Treatment Plant and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to temporary suspend the construction work on the project till an amicable solution was found. He had appealed the people of Chrar-e-Sharief constituency and adjoining areas of Chadoora in central Kashmir to maintain calm . He told media that Government will safeguard peoples interests. But the problem with this project is that 50 % of the work has already been completed. Under this project water will be lifted near Nowhar village from Doodh Ganga river which would be taken towards Kralpora where from it would be supplied to Srinagar and some parts of Chadoora. Agriculture Minister Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura told media that the construction work of laying of 600 MM Di Pipe project was sanctioned with an estimated cost of Rs 44 crore during the previous regime in September 2013 to augment the existing drinking water scenario in the area and the work on the same was started in October 2014. National Conference has lashed out at the PDP lead Government for its "astounding insistence" to go ahead with the ERA-sponsored water supply scheme being sourced from a tributary of Doodh Ganga river. Former Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, while condemning this called it "Government's highhandedness and cruelty" in dealing with protests in Chadoora and Chrar-e-Sharief, he said, this project would be a disaster if the Government proceeds with it and would adversely affect the farmers in the surrounding areas. While issuing a statement in Srinagar on Saturday National Conference leader Nasir Aslam Wani has alleged that Police and Paramilitary forces have unleashed hell on protesters in Sogam, Doyun and Dowlatpora villages of Chadoora area and also various areas in Chrar-e-Sharief constituency. He also said that Government has house arrested Abdul Rahim Rather in Srinagar and he is not being allowed to visit Sogam Chadoora to meet the people injured during clashes. NC alleges that many civilians have been injured and there are reports of alleged misbehavior with womenfolk by the police and paramilitary forces. This is unacceptable and speaks volumes about the PDP-BJP Government's arrogance and sense of entitlement. "The work on laying of pipeline has already been completed upto Chadoora. The work began from Kralpora early this year and ERA has already vandalized the road from Kralpora to Chadoora , if the work is stopped now what was the fun to do all this vandalization ? " said a local Abdul Aziz a resident of Chadoora "It was Omar Abdullah who gave nod to this project as he happened to hold charge of planning Ministry , now the same party is speaking against this project , if they had have given consent to this project , why do all this politics now . People want answer from Omar Abdullah ? " said Manzoor Ahmad a resident of Nagam Chadoora |
