Element of hope has crept into latest Modi-Sharif hug | | | An element of hope and caution remained entailed with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's visit to Pakistan on Friday not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in the Indian subcontinent too. Well initially people and political leaders across the globe treated Modi's landing in Pakistan sudden and unexpected but the schedule for a brief stay in Pakistan had been decided by the two sides a fortnight ago.Had it been something sudden he would not have carried gifts for Nawaz Sharif's family members. Well many in Kashmir, including APHCChairman, Molvi Umar Farooq, saw in the meeting a big hope because the visit had taken place on the day when India celebrated former Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's birthday. And Atal's name rings hope and delight among people in Jammu and Kashmir because he, as Prime Minister, had travelled to Lahore in a bus 16 years ago in search olf peace and amity between the two sides. That is something else if Pakistan had sabotaged Tal's goodwill mission by staging Kargil conflict. Amid the hope that the Kashmir issue will find space in the Indo-Pak dialogue, people and political voices in Kashmir on Friday expressed surprise, happiness as well as a note of caution as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pakistan. "The re-engagement with Pakistan is a good step and a very welcome development. However more than grand gestures, we need consistency," former state Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said in a tweet. Omar however cautioned about the 'flip-flop' nature of Indo-Pak engagements in the past. Modi's visit, which marks a first by an Indian Prime Minister to Pakistan in the past decade, came as the surprise of the day and was welcomed by political leaders from across the spectrum in the state here. "It is a good step. We welcome it. It is also in the interest of Kashmir that both India and Pakistan come forward," moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said He expressed surprise over the "sudden and surprising" announcement by Modi to visit Lahore to wish his counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his birthday.Though surprising, but Prime Minister Modi choosing Nawaz Sharif's birthday and also Mohammad Ali Jinnah's and Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday is a good gesture. In fact, nobody knew that Modi will choose this day to visit Pakistan, according to Mirwaiz, who has backed Indo-Pak dialogue process in the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pakistan may be seen as an ice-breaking initiative by political observers, but the displaced Kashmiri Pandits living in camps in Jammu for the last two decades are not much enthusiastic about the outcome of the surprise trip. Majority of Pandits say they hear about big breakthrough on Kashmir whenever the leaders from both the countries meet, but nothing has changed in the past over two decades. Every talk process between India and Pakistan is projected to end the deadlock over Kashmir, but that has not happened for last six decades. As victims of militancy displaced people feel that this could be just another futile exercise. Diplomatic talks never touch the issue of displaced people who were uprooted due to militancy. Be it from the Valley or border areas of the state. People have lost all hope as every talk process is accompanied by a terror attack. People in J&K don't trust Pakistan. This feeling finds expression in every home of displaced people despite Bollywood actor Anupam Kher welcoming the Prime Minister's Pakistan's visit, saying it is a great diplomatic move. Kher believes that the intent of the Prime Minister is positive, to give peace a chance and end perpetual hostility between the two countries. If the intent is there, things can move in a positive way. The Jammu and Kashmir Government has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise visit to Pakistan to meet his counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Lahore. In a statement issued from New Delhi, Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed said he was delighted by Modi's visit which will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and usher in an era of peace and stability in the region. There is nothing wrong in nursing hopes because one hope generates another and allows people to live on hopes. |
