| Decks being cleared for Mehbooba as CM | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad

Srinagar, Jan 4: Amid speculations that Mehbooba Mufti may take over as J&K Chief Minister, the BJP is likely to convene a meeting in the coming days to clear party's stand on the issue, Early Times has learned.
Sources said that the fresh development over Mehbooba to take over as CM's post is in the backdrop of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed fragile health who was admitted to New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) on December 24 after he complained of uneasiness and was flown to New Delhi in a state air craft.
On Monday, Mufti spent 13th consecutive day in AIIMS with government saying his health condition is "stable but critical". Several BJP and PDP leaders have indicated the change in leadership in J&K with the elevation of Mehbooba as chief minister of J&K.
Sources said the BJP state unit is likely to convene a meeting of all its legislators and other party leaders in Jammu where they will take the final call whether they will accept Mehbooba as chief minister of the PDP-BJP alliance in the state."After taking opinions from the state BJP leadership, the recommendations will be sent to the party high command. The BJP will also discuss the party's strategy in the urban local bodies elections," a senior BJP leader said. However, the BJP and PDP leaders are tightlipped how soon the elevation of Mehbooba Mufti as chief minister could be in the state.
National Vice President and Member parliament of BJP Avinesh Rai Khanna declined to comment over Mehbooa taking as chief minister of the state. "We are yet to take the final decision but we pray for the speedy recovery of Mufti Sayeed Sahib," Khanna said.
Another party leader Ramesh Arora said the party was yet to finalize the issue. "If it happens then the opinion of every state leader will be taken into account on the issue and same will be forwarded to the party high command and the Centre will take the final call," Arora said.
BJP State President Sat Sharma said that such decisions are taken in the core group meeting of the party and didn't divulge further details.
However sources in the corridors of the power said that the Political Advisor to Chief Minister Amitabh Mattoo would also meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav this week to discuss the issue.
Sources said Mehbooba Mufti is also likely to return the state in the coming few days after which PDP would also hold a meeting. "All PDP leaders have consented Mehbooba to be chief minister but we will still hold a meeting in next few days," a PDP leader said.
"Mufti Sahib may be discharged from the hospital but doctors may advise him for the long rest. So Mehbooba deserve to be the chief minister and has to take reins from her father for the smooth functioning of the government," he said.
Sources said the BJP may also seek two more ministerial portfolios of Home and Tourism if Mehbooba takes over chief minister of J&K. |
