Jammu, Jan 4: A day after Government of India asked the PDP-BJP government not to consider the demand to disband the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP on Monday made it clear that any such move would be opposed tooth and nail and there is no question of disbanding VDCs.
Senior BJP leader and Forest Minister Bali Bhagat while talking to Early Times said, "Everyone is aware about the role VDC played while fighting militancy in the state. I was a part of crusade against militancy in Doda district. There is no possibility about VDCs being disbanded in the near future. BJP had fought to get VDCs established. How we can ignore, what VDC had done to discourage the presence of militants in the state."
Without naming the PDP senior Minister who had demanded disbanding of VDCs, Bhagat said, "Militancy has not ended in Jammu and Kashmir. Police and security forces cannot provide security to every citizen. People who say that VDCs should be disbanded are unaware about the ground realities. They enjoy
Z plus security and believe everyone enjoys the same."
"VDC members fought against militancy without fearing for their lives", he said, adding, "A few anti-national elements are creating chaos to defame VDC", he said. "We are 1.25 crore population in the state, and everybody has own point of view. People, who want to destabilize little bit peace attained after huge sacrifices by belt forces and civilian, won't be allowed to succeed in their nefarious designs", he added.
Pertinently, a senior PDP leader and a minister had demanded that VDCs should be banned after a few stray incidents of violence in Rajouri district last month.
"It's unfortunate that a stray incident is being blown out of proportion and no one is making a mention about the good work done by VDCs during the past two and half decades. Village Defence Committees have played an important role to fight militancy during the past two decades. Many VDC members died while fighting militants in erstwhile Doda district and other frontier areas of Jammu region. We need to respect their sacrifices," said an analyst.
He opined that politics and VDCs should not be linked as politicizing this vital force can prove to be disastrous in long run. "It's strange that a mainstream party (NC) is behaving like separatists. Till date only separatists used to demand the disbanding of VDCs now NC and PDP have also joined the bandwagon," he said, adding, "They should mend their ways."
