Pakistan's mysterious delay to participate in Islamic military alliance | | | Why should Pakistan await further details before it agreed to participate in the meeting of a 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism? There does not seem any justification for Pakistan to have any second thought over a noble plan conceived by Saudi Arabia. And critics of Pakistan argue, that too rightly, that if an idea had been mooted to form a front against India, Pakistan would have, without any second thought, accepted the plan and agreed to be one among the first nations to participate in the meeting. In fact Saudi Arabia has recently announced the formation of a 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism. Reports indicate that several Islamic countries expressed an urge for the formation of the military alliance for taking on the terrorists of various hues. The countries which initiated the plan have decided on the formation of a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism, with a joint operations centre based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations. A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned. The announcement cited "a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organizations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorise the innocent."Iran, Saudi Arabia's archrival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen. The United States has been increasingly outspoken about its view that Gulf Arab states should do more to aid the military campaign against the militant Islamic State (IS) militant group based in Iraq and Syria. There is no need for examining the plan thoroughly because the intentions of the architects of the plan are noble and aimed at ending a menace that has caused more deaths and destruction all over the world than any plague. What is intriguing is the way terrorists, most of them being muslims, have resorted to killing of muslims and that too belonging to the Islamic countries. Whether it is the ISIS, or the Al Qaeda or the Taliban or other brands of terrorists belonging to Lashkar-i-Toiba, Jash-e-Mohammad or Hizbul Mujahideen all their activists keep on killing muslims in Islamic countries.Hence it is the duty of all muslim nations to join hands and launch a joint military operations against these terrorists. Though Pakistan has welcomed the formation of the alliance,it is yet to make up its mind whether to take an active role in the operations proposed to be launched by the alliance. The Foreign Office has said Pakistan welcomed the formation of the 34-Nation alliance to counter terrorism but said Islamabad is awaiting further details in this regard to decide the extent of its participation. According to a statement issued by Foreign Office, Pakistan, while welcoming the formation of alliance by Saudi Arabia reminded the world that Pakistan has consistently supported all regional and international efforts to combat militancy, extremism and terrorism and, to this end, has extended its full support and cooperation to international community."It would be recalled that the Forty-Second Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Kuwait this year had reiterated its commitment to relevant UN and OIC resolutions on combating terrorism and extremism and called for joining regional and international efforts to fight terrorism and extremist thought." read the statement. The statement further says that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia enjoy close, cordial, and brotherly relations. Both countries condemn terrorism and cooperate in the efforts to eliminate this menace If Pakistan condemns terrorism why should it delay its decision on its active participation in the 34-nation Islamic alliance? Possibly Islamabad does not want to enrage terrorists operating in Pakistan. Also it does not like to invite any attack from ISIS and the Taliban when it is taking active role in bringing about reconciliation between Kabul and the Taliban. |
