Pak involvement in airbase attack unearthed
1/6/2016 8:57:24 PM
Gradually the Indian security and intelligence agencies have been able to unearth Pakistan's major terror plan to attack the airbase at Pathankot with the purpose of destroying fighter planes, helicopters and other vital installations and equipment inside the air base. In fact the security agencies have claimed that the militants, wearing Army fatigue, had been not only trained in Pakistan but had carried arms ammunition and explosives that could help them to keep the airbase under their target for over 60 to 70 hours. They had worn shoes that had been manufactured in a well known shoe company in Pakistan thereby further confirming that militants had come from across Pakistan as those who carried out mayhem in Mumbai in 2008 had come from Pakistan. Even after initially refraining from blaming the country, security and intelligence agencies believe that the terrorists behind the Pathankot airbase attack appeared to have received training from a "professional armed force in Pakistan." The fidayeen (suicide) squad was more lethal and better trained than the 26/11 Mumbai attackers. They had enough arms and ammunition, including under barrel grenade launchers, for a sustained operation of more than 60 hours against a professional army. According to intelligence agencies establishing the identity of the terrorists would be a challenge because Pakistan would certainly not own them up. Security forces inside the air base have found bodies of five terrorists. A sixth one was blown to pieces when the building he had taken refuge in was brought down with explosives on Monday. DNA samples would be preserved, reports indicated. Even during the Mumbai mayhem Pakistan still has not accepted India's claim that terrorists, who had targeted various crowded places in Mumbai, had come from Pakistan. And Islamabad was trying to adopt the same policy on Pathankot attack. The developments within the airbase in Pathankot during the last four days seem to have jeopardized the proposed Foreign secretary level talks for which the stage had been set not only by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had visited Islamabad recently but by the National Security advisors of India and Pakistan who had detailed discussion in Bangkok. Hitherto, neither New Delhi nor Islamabad has announced cancellation of talks except that the proposed talks were being rescheduled so that the two sides meet under relaxed atmosphere. The opposition Congress has started berating the BJP led NDA Government for not holding Pakistan responsible for the Pathankot airbase attack. Well Islamabad has denied its involvement and that too rightly because the United Jehad Council, led by Syed Salahuddin, and Jash-e-Mohammad have claimed responsibility for the attack. Here Islamabad can be blamed because since 2008 it has not accepted India's plea for taking firm action against Hafiz Saeed, the Chief of JuD and Azhar Masood, Chief of Jash-e-Mohammad. But the opinion at the international level opposes any bid to cancel the proposed bilateral dialogue process. As a votary for improving ties between India and Pakistan Washington has opposed any plan to scuttle the talks following the Pathankot attack. The U.S. has urged India and Pakistan to stay the course on improving bilateral relation in the wake of the latest terror strikes on two Indian targets - thePathankot air force base and the Indian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan. Describing terrorism as a shared challenge that "all countries in the region" must fight together, Washington has said the U.S "strongly encouraged the governments of both India and Pakistan to remain steadfast in their commitment to a more secure and prosperous future for both their countries and for the region. "Even China and Russia have ujrged India and Pakistan to keep the channels of dialogue open. But it is strange that developed nations have not berated Pakistan for having played indirect role in supporting terrorists' plan to target Pathankot air force base. But how long will India remain on the receiving end while meeting growing challenges from militant handlers who seem to be enjoying full freedom in Pakistan. It is time Islamabad acts fast and with force and fury against terrorists and their handlers which could encourage New Delhi for keeping the doors of dialogue open.
