Naeem Akhtar hints at Mehbooba's elevation as CM

srinagar, Jan 6: The close confidant of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Naeem Akhtar has finally hinted at PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti's elevation as the Chief Minister in the State, terming her an 'undisputed' leader and party's faith.
PDP's senior leadership was till date tight lipped over the issue and was even found refusing to comment over whether Mehbooba would assume office of the Chief Minister in near future.
This is for the first time that the Government spokesman who happens to be privy to Mufti's health has hinted at party's consent over elevation of Mehbooba to the top post.
By terming Mehbooba as an undisputed leader and party's faith, Akhtar has sent a signal across the party cadre that such a development could take place at any time and that the PDP has evolved consensus over such insidious issue unanimously. "Our first concern is Mufti Sayeed's health, not change of guard. As of now, there is no such move. But, obviously, Mufti Sayeed has himself been saying that Mehbooba Mufti is the right person to lead. There is a complete consensus in the party on it because she is the right leader as she represents aspirations of the cadre and is an undisputed leader. She has been voice and faith of PDP." Akhtar was quoted by news reports as saying on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, sources revealed to Early times that the condition of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed continues to remain unchanged and that doctors have termed him in a critical State.
With State reeling under the governance crises, the dearth of the head of the State was seriously being felt- compelling the collation to take a final and an urgent call over the change of guard.
Interestingly, on Monday, Akhtar had termed the reports of Mehbooba's elevation as mere rumors- asking people not to pay any heed to them. It was late on the Wednesday that the incumbent Education Minister and Mufti's close confidant started sending the feelers about the change of guard. Besides praising Mehbooba, Akhtar termed Mehbooba's elevation as Mufti's wish.
Earlier, there were reports that as the Budget session is scheduled to take place on January 18, Mehbooba would sworn in as the Chief Minister ahead of that. The PDP's senior leadership had resolved that if there is no improvement in the health of the Chief Minister in a week's time then Mehbooba's elevation would become inevitable.
The Chief Minister was admitted in AIIMS on December 24, and there has been no delegation of powers of the CM to anyone, including Deputy CM Nirmal Singh.
During his last press conference in Jammu in November, Mufti had hinted at Mehbooba succeeding him. "She is a grassroots leader and it has been due to her efforts that the PDP got a good number of seats and the party formed the Government. She has better connect with the people and deserves to be Chief Minister, but it would be a collective decision," he had said.
