Valley people aghast over pesky power cuts, inflated bills

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 6: Pesky power-cuts and flawed electricity bills issued by the Power Development Department (PDD) in Srinagar city has forced consumers to train guns against the authorities concerned with people threatening to come on the roads if the issue is not resolved.
Up in arms against the PDD for bothersome power supply, people across the Valley have expressed resentment over the state government's "ineptitude" to resolve the issue.
Since PDD announced its new curtailment schedule, most of the city areas are reeling under complete darkness with authorities taking no firm steps to mitigate the woes of the general public.
Consumers from metered areas alleged that PDD has taken them for a ride. "Meters were installed with a promise that we will get round the clock electricity, but the fact is that during winter we always face unscheduled power cuts and this year situation is worse," Syed Iqbal Kirmani a retired Professor told 'Early Times' .
He said that every year PDD comes up with same excuse of less generation and more demand. "Despite power tariff being raised so many times during past two years, PDD has nothing to offer to its consumers except lame excuses," he added.
"We want the government to answer as to why people should bear the brunt of its incompetence of settling down the issue. Why should our children face problems while studying owing to power cuts when we are regularly paying monthly electricity bills to the department without any delay?" asked
Shakeel Ahmad Panzoo, a shopkeeper.
According to the recent curtailment schedule issued by the PDD, consumers in metered areas have to face five hours without power a day, apart from unscheduled cuts, and for non-metered areas the curtailment schedule was increased to nine hours per day.
As a part of this grim scenario, the residents of flood affected areas including Jawahar Nagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Natipora, Raj Bagh and adjoining areas continue to spend their evening hours in darkness while even during the day time, pesky power cuts continue to bother them.
"The power failure has been making matters worse for us. The power continues to play hide and seek and sometimes we didn't receive supply for days altogether," said a resident of Mehjoor Nagar, adding that though they pay the fatty bills to the department on monthly basis and yet they fail to supply them electricity on schedule basis.
Consumers in many city areas also complained about the flawed electricity bills issued to them by the authorities.
"This has become a routine for PDD to commit mistakes while preparing monthly bills. Last month I received the bill for Rs 1.17 lakh, and when I approached the PDD office they apologized," Mohammad Sultan Shera of Jawahar Nagar said.
He claimed that the department has again issued him the same flawed bill with same mistake they had committed last time.
