Fate of PDP-BJP alliance hangs in balance | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 9: The delay in formation of Government by two alliance partners PDP and BJP has put a question mark on continuance of coalition by the two parities in future. The reluctance shown by PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti to take oath has as the next Chief Minister has put the question mark on the entire process. The delay in formation of new Government as warranted under Constitution of the State has put a constitutional crisis in J&K with both coalition parties buying some more time in this regard. As a Constitutional procedure the successor of a Chief Minister who breathed his last on chair should be elected within 24 hours or the State be put under President's or Governor's rule. Mehbooba's reluctance to take oath indicates that all is not well between the two coalition partners and the sharp differences have cropped up. According to sources the main reason of rigid stand taken by Mehbooba is the reluctance which was shown by BJP in installing her as CM earlier after Mufti Mohammed Sayeed proposed her name before the BJP leadership giving reason that he will step down due to his health problem. However BJP did not show any inclination to the same at that time which has annoyed Mehbooba and her supporters in the party. Sources said Mehbooba is looking at various options before she takes final decision on government formation despite the fact that the PDP legislature party is solidly behind her leadership. The PDP leader is working the gains as well as losses of realigning with BJP as well as the Party's future prospectus. The Party is also working out the options of aligning with Congress as the party has through back channel diplomacy established the contacts with PDP leadership also regarding a possible alignment, sources added. However by aligning with PDP-Congress may lose NC which remained its ally from 2008 to 2014 in the State. For its political survival NC will also try its options of alignment as the both NC and PDP are arch rivals and the two parties don't like to see face to face with each other. Sources said the BJP has for the time being adopted wait and watch policy and it has kept the cards close to its chest keeping all options open. The Party has not shown any hurry in joining the coalition but may make more bargaining in joining hands with any political party for government formation in the State. |
