PDP miffed over suggestions to break alliance | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 9: As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti is in no hurry to take oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, a few people have started speculating that she is not interested in carrying forward the alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party, while a few are working overtime to ensure that PDP-BJP alliance ends in the State. "Mehbooba, who is in shock due to death of her father (late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed), needs time to reconcile with the situation," said a politician He said it's unfortunate that a few people are trying to "politicize Mufti Sayeed's death," he said, "A few people are working overtime to ensure that Government falls." On Saturday Independent MLA Er Rashid, who is known for poking his nose in all the matters, issued a statement advising PDP leadership to reconsider its ties with BJP and added that party must use this opportunity to "Rectify the mistake of entering into an alliance with BJP." He made it clear that if PDP says goodbye to its coalition partner, National Conference, Congress and independents are ready to support the PDP to form the next Government in the State. A PDP leader expressed outrage over Rashid's statement saying, "We have lost our mentor. Mehboobaji has lost her father, guide and mentor and she wants to mourn his demise. Please give us four days. We don't need any suggestions and advises at this point of time. Mufti Sayeed was our guide and we are finding it hard to believe that he is no more." An analyst while talking To Early Times said, "We cannot brush away Rashid's statement at this crucial time. A very important point which needs to be pondered upon is that Rashid has assured PDP that NC and Congress would support the party. How can he give assurance on the behalf of NC and Congress?" asked the analyst. Sources claimed that a few leaders from the opposition camp have got in touch with their friends in PDP and are insisting that party should reconsider its alliance with BJP. Pertinently, BJP's General Secretary Ram Madhav, who had flown to Srinagar from New Delhi on Friday, had told reporters that "I went to express my condolence to Mehboobaji. The constitutional process has to be taken forward. We (Mehbooba and I) had discussions over it." Even the sources within the PDP claim that there is no threat to coalition and Mehbooba would take oath after the mourning gets over on Sunday. "Some people are trying to create confusion. We have not held any discussions with the senior party leaders since the day Mufti Sayeed fell ill in December," said a PDP leader. He said, "I believe that Mufti Sayeed had entered into the coalition with BJP and no one among us would like to overrule his decision. If BJP doesn't put any conditions I don't think we are going anywhere." |
