BJP's rotational CM suggestion unacceptable: Beigh | Jammu's claim justifiable | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 9: Credible sources within the BJP said that "there is a powerful group in the party which wants the BJP high command not to join the state government unless the PDP accepts the 2002 power-sharing formula between the PDP and the Congress and agrees for equal representation in the council of ministers". "We accepted a lop-sided power-sharing formula in March last year and the party's credibility got dented in Jammu. We cannot barter away the party's interests yet again by endorsing the same power-sharing formula," said the sources quoting this "powerful" group within the party. "The BJP and its ally People's Conference have 28 MLAs. The PDP also has the same number. Hence, Jammu and Kashmir Valley needed to be treated equally," the sources further said. Besides, sources also claimed that "one of the reasons why PDP president Mehbooba Mufti couldn't take oath of office and secrecy on Friday - apart from the fact that she was in a state of shock - was the necessity on the part of the BJP to evolve a broad consensus over the power-sharing formula". "Though the party high command authorized J&K BJP in-charge Ram Madhav to hold discussions with the PDP leadership over the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition government at the earliest to avoid any constitutional crisis in J&K, it was the 'internal factor' that caused a delay in the formation of the coalition government under the leadership of Mehbooba Mufti". That there was some truth in what these sources told Early Times became clear when founder member of the PDP and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh on Friday said that the BJP couldn't change the rules of the game at this point in time and ask for a rotational Chief Minister or more cabinet portfolios. Talking to reporters at the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti's Fairview residence at Gupkar road, Srinagar, PDP ideologue and Member Parliament said that "the rules of the game cannot be changed midway into the game and BJP needed to stick to whatever it had agreed upon regarding the chief minister's post and cabinet portfolios". He responded when his attention was drawn to reports that the "BJP was asking for a rotational chief minister and demanding more cabinet portfolios before going ahead with the new government formation". It is difficult to predict at this point in time if the BJP high command stuck to the 50:50 formula, or the 2002 power-sharing formula between the PDP and the Congress. However, what can be said without fear or favour is that the attitude of the PDP towards Jammu is unfriendly. How could Beigh oppose the demand in Jammu for rotational chief minister and proportional representation in the council of ministers? The stand that Beigh took was as irrational as it was provocative. The people of Jammu region have their own aspirations, which no Valley leader should overlook. It's the Kashmiri bias that is responsible for the alienation of Jammu from Kashmir. If the Kashmiri leadership sincerely wishes that the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh remains intact, it has no other option but to completely endorse the demand in Jammu for rotational chief minister, equal number of berths in the cabinet. It has to deal with the people of Jammu region whatever they may think about them. |
