Kashmir sees decrease in number of militants: Army
Army's counter-infiltration grid limits LoC intrusion attempts
2/14/2016 11:16:57 PM
Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Feb 14: The Army today said that its counter-infiltration grid had limited the number of intrusion attempts by militants as compared to the previous years and there had been a decrease in the number of militants in Kashmir.
GOC of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, Lt Gen Satish Dua, while addressing media here after paying tributes to the two army personals killed in the Kupwara encounter, said as compared to the previous years, there had been a significant decrease in the presence of militants and their numbers were decreasing rapidity.
He said no doubt the topography on the Line of Control (LoC) "is such that infiltration does take place but army has been able to limit the numbers over the years as a result which Kashmir is seeing a decrease in the number of militants".
"You are aware about infiltration that would take place some 10 years ago, today I cannot deny that infiltration is not taking place. In 2015, there were more than 600 inputs of infiltration by militants but because of the counter-infiltration grid, we have been able to limit their numbers," the GOC said.
He said the number of militants waiting at the launch pads on other side of LoC (Pakistan) had also come down significantly over the years to less than a 100.
Pertinently, in previous years, security forces would say that more than 1,000 militants were ready at launch pads across the LoC to enter Jammu and Kashmir.
The GOC said while there were higher number of inputs about the infiltration attempts likely to be made by militants from the frontier Kupwara district, the counter-infiltration troops were on high alert to foil them.
In the past three months many infiltration attempts took place and several operations were conducted in Kupwara border areas in which many militants were killed.
Earlier, Army paid tributes to its two army personnel-- Lance Naik Shinde Shankar Chandrabhan and Gnr Sahadev Maruti More - at B B cantonment here
In a statement, Army said Shinde and Sahadev were the leading scouts of the team of Army and JKP that had launched a search operation in Zonreshi Village, Chowkibal in Kupwara district on Feb 12 last.
"As is often in case of counter-terrorist operations where security forces take first hit because terrorists invariably take shield of the civilians, soldiers came under an intense volley of fire. Shinde and Sahadev Maruti bore the brunt but true to their reputation for selfless bravado and grit, they, despite being grievously wounded, immediately retaliated with fire and prevented the terrorists from firing with impunity. They continued fighting the terrorists leading eventually to their elimination," the statement said
While saluting the duo, Lt Gen Satish said 'their sacrifices have inspired entire generation of soldiers and added that their families will forever remain the Army's responsibility and that it will ensure they are looked after and lead a life of dignity and pride".
