Azad Condemns Assault on Anand Sharma in JNU | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 14: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has strongly condemned the physical assault carried out on senior Congress Leader and Deputy Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party by the goons and lumpen elements in JNU yesterday. Calling the attack as reprehensible and frightening Azad said that such acts of vandalism and physical violence pose grave threat to the very existence of our democratic system. Azad expressed concern over the unleashing of forces of intolerance and bigotry by the BJP on the political opponents and said that such tendency can derail the democratic system which has come into existence after innumerable sacrifices of our people in the freedom struggle. Azad said that civility and 'respect for the other viewpoint' are fundamentals elements of a functioning democracy. Cautioning the Central Govt., Azad said that it is not in the interest of society to systematically erode well established institutions that have brought glory and grace to the country globally, and that ill-conceived and over-enthusiastic moves to cow down the voices of dissent will shake the very foundation of our vibrant democracy. Azad demanded stern action as per law on the culprits so that terrorizing the voices of dissent does not become a norm in our society, especially the educational institutions of repute. |
