Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 10: A doctors’ body in Jammu and Kashmir has sought the state government’s intervention to check the menace of spurious drugs in the Valley, claiming that no serious efforts were being made to curb it. A delegation of Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) led by its president Nisar-ul-Hassan called on Governor’s Advisor Pervez Dewan here yesterday, an official spokesman said today. The delegation informed the Advisor that the drug market was unchecked and unregulated and no serious efforts were being made to curb the menace, he said. The Advisor discussed the implementation of drug policy for ensuring availability of free and quality drugs to poor patients in government hospitals, the spokesman said. “I along with my colleague and friend, (Advisor to Governor) Khurshid Ganai have been discussing this issue with the Governor. We will soon come up with some relief for needy cancer patients of the state,” the spokesman quoting Dewan who addressed people who had come to meet him at a banquet hall here. “We have a sizeable population of distressed cancer patients in our state and we are keen to reach out to them with some relief. They should feel that someone is there to share their pain,” he said. Dewan, who was hearing the case of a woman cancer patient, said the society at large should come forward for their help. He said in order to save the expenses of individual applicants and deputations from Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra had decided that the Advisors will travel to the summer capital, Srinagar, frequently to redress the people’s grievances. Jammu and Kashmir is currently under Governor’s rule following the death of incumbent Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7. He is functioning from winter capital, Jammu, and is being assisted by two advisors - Dewan and Ganai.
