Mehbooba returns from Delhi without meeting BJP top brass
3/11/2016 12:04:42 AM
ET Report
Srinagar, Mar 10: In a significant development the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti returned to Srinagar on Thursday and after spending a few hours here she left for Doda to attend party's convention there, sources told Early Times.
Mehbooba returning to Srinagar without meeting the BJP top brass has triggered speculations that PDP and BJP have "failed to break the ice" and possibilities of government formation in JK are bleak. However, a PDP insider while talking to Early Times maintained that talks with BJP leadership are on.
Asked why Mehbooba returned to Srinagar without meeting the BJP top leaders, including the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the insider said, "Just wait and watch."
Sources said, "Mehbooba returning from Delhi without any breakthrough being achieved indicates that no headway has been made vis-à-vis government formation in the state."
Earlier, the speculations were rife that the government would be formed once the PDP chief returns from New Delhi but after her return Mehbooba didn't utter a word and remained silent over the issue. Sources revealed that PDP President has made it clear to the BJP leaders that "Agenda of Alliance" has to be implemented in letter and spirit. "Mehbooba won't join hands with BJP again till Centre announces some Confidence Building Measures," sources added.
Its in place to mention here that speculations were rife that government in JK would be in place after Budget session of the parliament would end on March 16.
The PDP Chief earlier this week had dropped enough hints about PDP being ready to go ahead with BJP in government formation, she had said that her late father Mufti Sayeed's decision to have the alliance with the saffron party was like a "will" to be fufilled by his children even if they get "consumed" while doing so.
Mehbooba, seen as successor to Sayeed as Chief Minister, said her father's decision to ally with BJP was "patther ki lakeer (something carved in stone)" and "I stand by his word".
At the same time, she had maintained that forward movement on implementation of the Agenda of Alliance by the BJP-led central government is a pre-requisite for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir which is under Governor's Rule since January 8.
Mehbooba had said the decision of Sayeed to form an alliance government with BJP and "to shake hands with the government at the Centre was for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, to maintain unity of the state, and for peace and development."
"The Agenda of Alliance which they (his father and BJP) chalked out is also very important just like Mufti Sahib's word," she had said.
Mehbooba had said she would form the government only if she feels that the dreams of her father would be fulfilled. "I will sit on the chair only if I feel I will fulfill the dreams of Sayeed for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The chair is needed for the people of the state, not for myself. If I will get the chair just for myself and my family, then I don't need it as I don't have such ambitions. If I had such an ambition, I would have taken the chair during the lifetime of my father," she had said.
