Amid delay in Govt formation, NC braces for fresh polls | | | Hyder Ali
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 10: While the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janta Party have failed to evolve consensus over government formation since the demise of the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in January, when Governor rule was imposed, their arch-rival National Conference here is bracing up for fresh Assembly elections "with full vigor." For the past over a fortnight, the NC working President Omar Abdullah has mobilized his cadres to be ready for the fresh elections. The NC has started this exercise from its erstwhile stronghold, the summer of Srinagar, where the party lost five out of eight seats in the Assembly elections of 2014. Amid "confident support" from the grassroots, sources said, the party plans to pressurize Governor NN Vohra to dissolve the assembly forthwith so that fresh elections are held. The NC is understood to be planning to undertake major roadside rallies to pressurize the Raj Bhawan, while some PDP leaders connected with grassroots have got alert to counter the move. The NC leaders have started to visit various areas of Srinagar to "re-cultivate the cadres at the Mohalla level" while many young faces are being roped in. Sources said the some public turnout at the recently held NC party rally at its Nawa-E-Subh headquarters on March 4, has leased a fresh lease of life to the party leadership otherwise dejected by the previous poll debacle. While the old guards, loyal to Dr Farooq Abdullah, mostly seem to be away from this new mobilization, the youth leadership is on the forefront with Omar. Some of the prominent faces, who are spearheading the "anti-PDP" campaign, include Nasir Aslam Wani, Aga Ruhullah, Tanvir Sadiq, Junaid Mattu and Salman Ali Sagar. Though since December 2014, Omar has been hesitant to rally anywhere in the city, except for his party headquarters and the mausoleum of the party founder at Hazratbal, the youth wing of the party has started "colony wise contact programs." While Junaid Mattu is often seen active in Sonawar constituency represented by PDP lawmaker Muhammad Ashraf Mir, Tanvir is active in Zadibal. Tanvir Sadiq, who was otherwise busy posting pictures of his "skiing or golf" leisure, has also resumed "active politics." Sadiq has been frequenting Zadibal constituency, represented by PDP MLA Abid Ansari. Tanvir has been telling the area youth that the "constituency has fallen into the hands of RSS." "If you don't defeat such forces the day is not far off when Srinagar will be another Nagpur," Sadiq said adding "we have to resist such Nagpuri penetrations." Junaid on the other hand has been busy personal visits of areas lie Harwan, Nishat and Sonawar to mobilize the party cadres. Salman Sagar is playing a "communal card" by trying to portray "PDP as an offshoot of RSS." He has gone infamous for hate-speeches, which are feared to polarize the public sentiment. "These people are all wearing RSS knicker from inside and time will expose them how they made a sellout of people of Kashmir by forging alliance with the BJP for vested interests," Salman told a youth delegation in downtown. Given the momentum, some of the youth leaders like Abdul Rauf, who was out of station, have been recalled gear up the momentum. On the other hand former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already said his party was ready for fresh elections in Jammu and Kashmir if PDP and BJP do not form a government. On March 5, he ruled out any fresh support to PDP, saying NC's offer to form a government after 2014 assembly polls was turned down and it facilitated the ascent of BJP to power in the state. Referring to the PDP he said: "There are branches of RSS in Srinagar now and they are brandishing weapons in their marches in Jammu. They are burning houses of our Gujjar brothers and then police open fire on them. In such a situation, what is the meaning of making an offer to PDP." The PDP leadership, on the other hand, having got inputs of NC's "marginal mobilization" has been of the opinion that the party should not waste time to forge alliance with the BJP. "We need to form the government so that this undue debate and criticism for having joined hands with the rightwing party is fought through good work, which people have been waiting for" said a PDP leader."We need to clear the air that BJP and Congress are all the same. All what people need is good work, which is only possible if we have support of BJP at the center," explained the PDP leader. He said efforts were to convince PDP President Mehbooba to continue alliance with the BJP. Mehbooba has been looking ahead for CBMs from the central government before she decides over continuation of alliance.
