'Illegal' occupants make merry of Govt quarters, deserving left high & dry | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 10: Transparency and accountability are yet to be seen in the evacuation of 'illegal' occupants from governmental residential quarters across the valley. Sources told Early Times that there are hundreds of governmental residential quarters across the state, which are illegally occupied by influential people. "Fact of the matter is that during previous governments, influential people not only have occupied governmental residential quarters but have made the public quarters as personal property from the past two decades," said sources. Sources said that, almost all government departments have their own residential quarters for their own employees, like higher officials who belong to far off places. These people were supposed to remain present on their place of posting, but they couldn't make it due to various unavoidable reasons. "Roads and Building, Estates, Health and Medical Education, Police, Forests, Public Works, Power Development Department, Irrigation and Flood Control and Public Health Engineering departments have their own residential quarters across the state, but hardly these quarters are utilized by their own employees", sources said. Sources said that 'influence' and 'favoritism' have crossed all the criteria in allotting the quarters to blue eyed persons. This has resulted in a situation that the concerned department has failed to evacuate the said quarters for the new allottees in time. Javid Ahmad (name changed) a government official from Baramulla said that he approached R&B department many times in past for an allotment of government quarter to, despite lapse of one year the allotment has not been done. "Nothing has been done till date. It is due to the reason that I don't have any influence. It is an irony that driver of the same department has been given a four room quarter for stay which has left me in a 'state of melancholy' as he was recommended by the top official of the district," said the official. Sources said that on March 8, Director Estates has ordered for eviction drive against illegal allottees so that the quarters become available for allotment to the deserving employees. "Governor Rule in Jammu and Kashmir has opened new doors of development, as the work is done without any fear or favour and that too without any favoritism. Previous governments have done nothing with regard to transparency and accountability, but Governor N N Vohra has done all that in a short span of time," said sources. Sources said that Governor should personally intervene into the matter as how the public property has been turned into personal property. "Why illegal occupants were not evacuated from all the districts of Kashmir valley despite several notices being issued to them from the concerned departments," they said. |
