Early Times Report

Udhampur, Mar 10: Former chief minister and National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah on Thursday favoured revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) only from peaceful areas of the state. “It is not me, but security forces who have to take the final call in the matter,’’ he told media persons at Udhampur when he was asked about his party standing on AFSPA. “What is the need of it in Udhampur?’’ he asked in apparent reference to peace prevailing in the town. “I feel that AFSPA shall be withdrawn, but from only those areas where depending upon the situation it is not required,’’ he said. “The security forces shall identify such areas,’’ he added.
Farooq had come to the town to convey his condolences to the parents of Captain Tushar Mahajan who had died fighting terrorists in the Valley last month. He appealed to the Prime Minister and Defence Minister to name Udhampur railway station after Tushar Mahajan.
He did not approve JNU leader Kashaiya Kumar’s statement accusing Indian Army of committing rapes in Kashmir. “Go and ask him why he is spitting venom against the Indian Army,’’ he said, adding that “one who speaks against the Indian Army is not the right person and action should be taken against him’’. The National Conference leader held PDP and BJP responsible for political uncertainty in the state, asking what he can do in the matter. He said that the BJP and PDP have the numbers, but are not forming government, adding that National Conference cannot do anything in the matter as it does not have the numbers. On shifting of the venue of T-20 cricket match between India and Pakistan from Dharamshalla to Kolkotta, Farooq said that “if we keep thinking like this then I feel that we cannot play cricket match anywhere’’.
