Demands revocation of Excise duty on Jewellery

Kathua, Mar 10: Arun Jaitely Union Finance Minister enhanced excise duty on jewellery items in Genral Budget 2016-17 but it triggered indefinite strikes and series of agitation across the country including district Kathua wherein Goldsmiths have closed their shops and expressed their resentment against NDA government. In this regard, Akhil Bharatiya Swarnkar Sangh today staged huge protest demonstration outside the office of DDC and submitted a memorandum comprising demand for revocation of excise duty from jewellery items. While addressing protesters, Vinod Damalia, Incharge A B Swarnkar Sangh Kathua unit said UPA-2 enhanced similar tax in 2012 which was stringently opposed by Goldsmiths in entire country including Bharatiya Janta Party whereas Narendra Modi, Baba Ramdev and other national leaders of the party supported the agitation and excise duty was revoked. Damalia said NDA government that supported agitation for revocation of excise duty in 2012 now itself strongly imposed the tax which will not be tolerated at any rate. Damalia said enhanced excise duty would directly affect the business and livelihood of middle class goldsmiths. He informed that A B Swarnkar Sangh will hold a mass protest in Delhi on March 17 wherein Union Finance Minister will be responsible even any consequence occurred. Swarnkar Sangh demanded revocation of excise duty and threatened to turn the strike indefinitely besides holding of aggressive protests in entire country including district Kathua.
