8 years on, Muniward water supply scheme awaits completion
Villagers seek Governor's intervention

Anantnag, Mar 15: Muniward and adjacent villages of this southern district are facing acute shortage of drinking water as after the passage of eight years; the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department is yet to complete the water supply scheme sanctioned for the villages in year 2008.
Inaugurated by the then PHE minister, Taj Mohiudin with much fanfare the estimated cost of the project was around 3 cr rupees. The deadline for the completion of the project was set as 2013. However, residents said department hasn't yet completed the project.
"It seems PHE department is in no mood to complete the scheme and make it operational," residents told Early Times.
They said that authorities have stopped work on the project a few years ago and despite our pleas officers aren't responding positively.
"They don't show any willingness to complete the project whenever we approach them," they said.
Residents said that they are being forced to fetch water from contaminated sources which is could be reason by many deadly diseases.
"Water Tanker of PHE department brings supply twice a day which is insufficient. We can't bath and clean clothes as per the requirement," Sajad Ahmad Dar a resident said.
He said that people of the area are crying for pure drinking water and the authorities are not bothered about their sufferings.
"Water presently used by the people of the area has been declared highly sulphuric and unsafe by the authorities," claimed Village welfare committee, Muniward Committee said that department is blaming cost escalation for their failure to complete the project at stipulated time, which is not true as the department has spent major amount on the project.
Village welfare committee on inquiring about the project on its own level has learnt that 35 lakh rupees out of the total sanctioned amount for the scheme are unspent for last eight years.
The villagers sought intervention of Governor N N vohra intervention so that the scheme is completed and made functional.
