PDP upbeat over Jaitley's statement | 'We hope the deadlock on Govt formation will end soon' | | Peerzada Ummer ET Report srinagar, Mar 15: A statement by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has raised the hopes of the People's Democratic Party, with its leaders deeming it as an indication from the Union Government over breaking of the two month long deadlock in JK over the Government formation. The PDP camp on Tuesday was seen abuzz with the discussions over Jaitley's statement made in Parliament in which he echoed the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti's demand of more liberal funding for the Jammu and Kashmir State from the Central Government. Jaitley said the Government stood by its commitment for "impartial development" of all three regions-Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and that the economic package will be implemented soon for the same. "We want to implement Rs 80,000 crore economic package of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for equitable development of the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir," Jaitley said, replying to the budget debate in Lok Sabha. The statement by the Union Finance Minister who is also considered as the trusted lieutenant of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come at the time when the parleys between the BJP and the PDP are entering into the final stage with PDP already throwing ball in the court of the Central Government over its demands for more liberal funding and keeping the agenda of alliance intact. PDP's one of the top leaders while commenting over Jaitley's statement termed it as a positive development, however cautioning that the PDP is yet to decide over how to respond to such a commitment made in the Parliament on Monday. "We are yet to deliberate over the issue but overall it is a positive development that has come to fore from the Union Government. We have already made our stand clear and we haven't kept anything hidden from the masses. We are optimistic that a final call over breaking of the deadlock will be taken so that peoples' Government is witnessed without the further delay," the PDP leader said. Another party bearer maintained that across the party line, Jaitley's statement carries much significance amid the present stalemate. He said that the Union Government has tried to reach out to the PDP leadership and it in itself is much symbolic. The PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has, since the demise of her father Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has been pitching for the JK specific CBMs and had asked New Delhi to announce vital measures, both on the political and economic fronts, ahead of any forward movement by her party on forming the Government with the BJP in the State. Furthermore, Mehbooba has been reiterating that her party was committed to the alliance and that the BJP-PDP bonhomie hasn't broken. The PDP, among other demands, has been seeking return of two power projects from National Hydel Power Corporation (NHPC) to the State. The State gets 12 percent royalty from the power projects owned by the NHPC in the State. |
