KU to start evening classes to overcome financial crunch | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 15: As the Kashmir University has "failed" to pay salaries to its contractual employees and daily wagers, the varsity is going to start evening classes of self-financed seats to overcome financial constraints. Sources said during the last one decade, around 800 daily wagers were appointed without following any criteria. Now Varsity is not able to pay salaries to these daily wagers besides hundreds of contractual lecturers. In order to overcome the financial constraints, the Varsity is conducting evening classes of self-financed seats from this session to overcome the financial constraints. There has been strong opposition of the decision however, with faculty members saying "it will affect the research work". "How can they double the intake capacity when there is least infrastructure in place?" a senior official said. Presently, the varsity has an intake capacity of 3500 students in regular mode and will now accommodate 7000 students of which more than half will be self-financed seats. The increase in self-financed seats will generate around 50 crores income annually to the varsity. Besides it is going to double the number of seats for B Ed and M Ed courses under the distance mode. "The University has turned into money minting machine. It has doubled its intake capacity and the infrastructure is same which was in place two decades ago and will compromise on quality of education," a senior Professor of the University said. The Varsity has to pay around 8 crores on salary of its employees monthly and the illegal appointments have put a huge burden on its exchequer. "During the last decade, hundreds of people have been appointed illegally without catering for funds," the official said. Sources said majority of HODs and senior officials have opposed the idea of starting evening classes. "We told the authorities that job of the university is not only to issue certificates but to do the research," an HOD of one of the departments said. Another official said the engaging of 800 daily wagers and purchasing of around 150 vehicles have put a huge burden on the varsity. "But that does not mean that it will be turned into a money minting machines and quality of education will also be compromised." |
