Allies avoid controversies

srinagar, Apr 4: Even as Mehbooba Mufti was sworn in as the first woman chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, which marks the beginning of the PDP's second innings with the BJP, the oath-taking was different from the previous one when her father Mufti Muhammad Sayeed formed government on March 1, 2015.
This time controversies were seemingly avoided by the alliance partners, otherwise considered ideologically poles apart. Amid ongoing row over "Bharat Mata ki jai" in the country, none of the BJP ministers shouted the slogan, though for the past few days former Chief Minister and National Conference President Omar Abdullah had been predicting at the same.
Unlike the previous oath taking, when "Bharat Mata ki jai" sloganeering rented the air, Omar prophesy proved wrong.
Mehbooba has kept her council of ministers smaller than that of her father's. While Mufti's council had 13 ministers from the PDP and 11 from the BJP, this time it's 11 each.
This time, however, the representation of Srinagar, which fetched five seats to the PDP in the Assembly elections of 2014, has been drastically reduced.
In the previous government, the summer capital had representation of three MLAs. But, as of now, only Asiya Naqash who represents the Hazratbal constituency has been retained in the council of ministers.
The other two lawmakers from Srinagar, who have been dropped, include businessman-turned-politician Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari.
On the other hand, Muhammad Ashraf Mir who had defeated Omar Abdullah in his home constituency of Sonawar was also dropped from the list.
Mehbooba's one time close aide and Chairperson of Women's rights commission in the previous regime, Nayeema Ahmed Mehjoor was missing from the oath-taking ceremony though last year she was conspicuous with her presence.
Srinagar MP, Tariq Hameed Karra, who for the past three months was often seen rubbing shoulders with Mehbooba and even accompanied her to Raj Bhawan when she staked claim for government formation, was conspicuous with his absence at the swearing-in ceremony.
