Foreign militant killed in Kupwara encounter | | | S Tahir-ul Haq KUPWARA, Apr 6: One foreign militant has been killed in an encounter with security forces while as two more are suspected to be holed up in the dense forests of Dardpora in Lolab area of this border district. The operation is still in progress. Sources said that a militant was killed during an overnight encounter with security forces in Dardpora area of Lolab in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. "Operation was suspended late last evening after which this morning a joint team of Army's 18 RR, 28 RR and SOG intensified the combing operation, the militants opened heavy volume of fire on the search party which was retaliated triggering a brief encounter," said sources. A senior police official told Early Times that on Tuesday afternoon a joint team of army's 28 RR, 18 RR and SOG cordoned off the Dardpora forest area in the frontier district following specific information about the presence of 2-3 heavily armed militants. "Due to darkness operation against the hiding militants was called off Tuesday late evening. In the meantime additional reinforcement was called in to seal the exit points so that the militants cannot escape from the site of encounter," the official said. He said that this morning operation was resumed to flush out the militants adding that during brief encounter one militant was killed with Army's 28 RR and SOG Kupwara. He said the weapon of the killed militant has been recovered from the site of operation. "The identification of the killed militant was not ascertained immediately, but it is learnt that he is a foreigner," the official said. When asked about the total number of militants, the official said that yet it is difficult to say the actual number of militants in the area, but it is believed that two to three militants have taken shelter in the dense forests. A local resident of Takipora said that the body of the slain militant was handed over to the local Auqaf committee for last rites. The Dardpora village is located close to the forests that were earlier used by militants as transit point to reach Bandipora district. It is pertinent to mention here that, the encounter began on Tuesday after forces launched an operation in the forests of Jindyal hamlet of Dardpora. |
