Gupta, Lone victims of BJP's 'use and throw' policy | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using and throwing its two insignificant allies, independent candidate from Udhampur Pawan Kumar Gupta and separatist turned mainstream politician Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone, whose party won two assembly seats in 2014 polls, has proved that nothing is permanent in politics. The BJP dropped Pawan Kumar Gupta from the council of ministers earlier this week and gave a chance to its own party leader to be the part of the new cabinet headed by the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti . Kumar, a BJP rebel, had contested the assembly polls against the BJP candidate from Udhampur and had emerged victorious. Soon after his victory he was once again owned by the BJP and was inducted into the cabinet of the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as Minister of State for Finance. The BJP won 25 assembly seats from the Jammu region but took its tally to 28 by incorporating Gupta and Sajad Lone. "BJP needed Lone and Gupta at that point of time as it was not sure about whom it would forge alliance with, National Conference or the Peoples Democratic Party. Had they gone with the NC at that point of time then support of Lone and Gupta was important to cobble up the requisite numbers," said an analyst. Soon after being dropped from the new cabinet Gupta had said, "When BJP denied me ticket in 2014 Assembly elections, I contested as an independent candidate and defeated my rival BJP candidate. Shortly after elections, BJP invited me to join them with a promise that I will be given a berth in Cabinet. That time too, the party ditched me and I was only given Minister of State portfolio. This time the BJP ditched me again. All the BJP ministers are non-performers who have resorted to malpractices and loot." A political expert said BJP would have dumped Sajad Lone and Pawan Kumar Gupta at the very outset but they were taken along and promised ministerial berths to secure their votes in Rajya Sabha elections, which BJP and PDP contested jointly. When Pawan Kumar was MoS Finance he kept on cribbing that he has no powers and Sajad Lone had also expressed unhappiness for being given the low key Animal Husbandry portfolio. He was promised that his ministry would be changed but that did not happen till the late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away on January 7 this year. Sajad by tendering his resignation and refusing to take charge of Social Welfare and ARI Trainings departments has put his foot down. He seems to have realized that BJP has cheated him and it's high time to call it quits. |
