Strong tremors shake Valley
3 houses damaged

SRINAGAR, Apr 10:An earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale today shook the Kashmir valley, causing panic among the residents. Three residential houses and second storey of Jamia Ahlihadees Mosque were damaged in different areas of Kashmir province due to earthquake.
"The magnitude 6.8 tremor was recorded at 4:01 pm today and lasted for many seconds. Its epicenter was in Hindukush region of Afghanistan.
It is learnt from senior MeT Official that, "Jammu and Kashmir is tectonically very active and there are frequent plate movements inside the earth. The frequent earthquakes are a cause of concern as this is a very active zone.
According to reports that, two residential houses were damaged in Palhallan and Handwara areas of north Kashmir's twin districts of Baramulla and Kupwara due to earthquake.
A residential house of Abdul Rashid Dar, S/o Ghulam Rasool Dar of Tantraypora Palhallan was also damaged in the earthquake that jolted Kashmir on Sunday afternoon.
Sources from Handwara told Early Times that, a residential house of Ab Gani Mir was damaged due to earthquake in Panzvoa vilgam village in Handwara Tehsil of Kupwara district, adding that second storey of Jamia Ahlihadees in Lalpora Lolab also got damaged due to earth quake.
While as sources said that a residential house of Muhammad Hussain Wadda resident of Aghahamam of Habba Kadal area in Srinagar was also damaged.
People in the entire valley came out of their houses and ran out into the open in order to avoid being caught in building collapses. Traffic came to abrupt halt in the valley as vehicles started swinging on shaking roads during the tremor.
However it is also learnt that, cracks appeared in most multi-storied private buildings across the Kashmir valley.
The epicentre of earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 was Hindukush region in Afghanistan. Tremors were also felt in Pakistan, Eastern Uzbekistanan, and Central Afghanistan and in India Haryana, Uttar Pradesh have also felt strong tremors today afternoon.
Meanwhile there is no loss of life from entire Kashmir valley till the reports last came in.
