Jammu, Apr 10: In a PCC executive committee meet, which was also attended by Ambika Soni, AICC general secretary and in charge of the party's J&K affairs, a demand was today unanimously put forward for early elections to urban local bodies (ULBs) and panchayats in the state.
The meeting was attended by the party MLAs, MLCs, districts presidents, leaders of frontal organisations like youth Congress, Seva Dal, INTUC, Mahila Congress and NSUI, ex-ministers and ex-legislators.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambika said Congress would remain steadfast on its principles of secularism, socialism and democracy and asked partymen to strongly fight against divisive and communal forces in the country and the state.
"Congress has the vital responsibility to strengthen bonds of unity and brotherhood in view of numerous diversities in the country and J&K. BJP has indulged in all kind of falsehood to exploit the sentiments of people in name of religion and regions, but has miserably failed to deliver after coming to power at the Centre. Realising that the dream of prime minister Narinder Modi and BJP president Amit Shah to have a Congress-free (mukt) Bharat can't be achieved through elections, the Centre destabilised Congress ruled states and imposed President rule in Arunchal Pradesh and Uttrakhand against all democratic norms. The Congress party and its leadership will, however, not be cowed down by such tactics of Modi government and the party will emerge stronger in all parts of the country," she asserted.
She appreciated the efforts of J&K PCC in galvanizing the party in the state after it lost elections. The party, however, lost only five seats as compared to its last tally mainly because of acute polarization and exploitation due to emotional slogans by BJP which left the society polarized and divided on regional and religious lines, she said.
Ambika said there was no demoralization in the party cadres in the state as they "see bright future for the party in the state and the country". "Rather the party cadres of ruling coalition parties are demoralised a lot for the reason of total surrender of their respective ideologies and slogans for the sake of power which has made the two parties unpopular amongst the people," she added.
She questioned the power sharing by two ideologically opposite parties - BJP and PDP -- and their coming together without any common meeting point except power. "The 3-month-long stalemate after the demise of Mufti Syed itself explains the comfort level of the two partners and now they have to explain this to the people," she said.
PCC senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma, CLP leader Rigzin Jora, ex-deputy CM Tara Chand , ex-MP Madan Lal Sharma, Upper House leader Jugal Kishore, deputy chairman Jahangir Mir, Mula Ram, Raman Bhalla, MLA Asgar Karbalai, MLA Vikar Rasool, general secretary Manjit Singh and Namarata Sharma also spoke on the resolution presented by party's chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, highlighting the overall political scenario and issues pertaining to different sections of society.
The meeting also criticised the government approach towards various categories of employees, especially ReTs, daily wagers and contractual, ad-hoc and CP workers in different departments and demanded resolution of their genuine demands in the shortest possible time. The resolution also criticised Modi government for its failure to fulfill the promises it had made with refugees and displaced persons of 1947, 1965, and 1971 and Kashmiri migrants.
The meeting also strongly reacted to the Srinagar NIT stalemate and condemned the brutal use of force on non-local students and reiterated the party demand for a judicial probe and punishment to the guilty.
