Ram Navmi celebrated in Kashmir, less devotees visit shrines | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 15: "Ram Navmi," the birth of Lord Ram was today celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in the Kashmir valley, where a spontaneous strike was observed in protest against the killing of four people, including a woman, in security force firing in the frontier district of Kupwara on April 12 and 13. Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti have greeted people on the occasion. Members of the Kashmiri Pandit community and security forces and central government employees today celebrated the festival. Devotees, including women and children, visited temples and offered special pujan and hawan. However, at Ram Mandir, Barbarshah, the pujari told reporters that this time only about a dozen devotees offered puja in the temple since morning. Despite migration of pandits from the valley, about three to four hundred devotees visited the temple on this occasion in the past. This time the number was less because of strike and restrictions. "We prayed for peace and prosperity in the state, he said. Reports of celebration of Ram Navmi were also received from other parts of the valley. Mr Vohra, has greeted the people on Ram Navmi and prayed that the auspicious occasion bring peace, progress and prosperity in the state. He said that the celebration of festivals, which are an important part of the glorious heritage, strengthens communal harmony and brotherhood and reinvigorate the secular ethos. The Governor prayed for the well-being of the people of the state. Ms Mufti also prayed for communal harmony, brotherhood, peace and prosperity in the State.
