Businessmen throw lavish parties to woo netas, babus | | | Hyder Ali Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 15: Some top businessmen in Kashmir are busy throwing lavish parties these days for the politicians and bureaucrats as a PR exercise to seek favours in return. Sources told Early Times a prominent businessman threw a lavish party here on Thursday evening. The party, which was gelled with "best cuisine and music", was attended by top politicians and the officers. Sources privy to this dinner party hosted at a plush hotel said the businessman had invited the "who's who of Kashmir" to the party and none of the invitees failed to attend the feast. A section of businessmen in Kashmir, however, termed the "gala partying", which lasted till late in the night, as a ploy to rope in the powerful babus and netas so that they (businessmen) can seek favours like big contracts and projects from them in return Sources said a section of influential businessmen have been ruling the roost irrespective of who remains in the power."Democracy has to be government of the people not the corporate houses who earn fortunes by keeping politicians happy," said a businessman. Insiders alleged that the businessman who threw the party on Thursday evening has been the beneficiary in every regime. "In the previous regime he was close aide of Omar Abdullah government and now he is close to PDP government," said a source. On Friday evening another leading businessman threw a party at Raj Bagh here. Even though a beeline of prominent people of Kashmir, mostly businessmen, made it to the dinner parties, hosted by the two businessmen the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries said it unanimously boycotted the parties through a formal whip. "Yes many of the big guns from the business fraternity are partying but none of our men attended the events. This I can tell you with confidence as we have formally passed a whip in this regard," a KCCI member told Early Times. Showing some SMS invites on his smart phone, he said: "See even though I too was invited to the parties, I didn't go." However some businessmen who attended the "memorable parties" said, "Criticizing merry-making is undue interference into someone's private life. Partying is something personal. May be those who were not invited to the dinner parties felt bad and want to avenge it through undue hate campaign," the businessmen said. |
