srinagar, May 9: The age old adage 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' aptly fits with a recent action of a minister of Mehbooba Mufti led coalition government in the state. The minister has been in news in past as well and he has added yet another 'feather' to his cap.
Sources told Early Times that Minister for Environment and Forests, Chaudhary Lal Singh came to Srinagar from Jammu on Sunday (May 8) by road. This gesture of the minister would have been appreciated by one and all, but that was not to be. This was due to the reason that the minister issued 'diktats' to the officers of the departments that are being looked after by him.
Lal Singh had issued directions to the higher ups of the ministry that he should be given a rousing reception while he is on way to Srinagar from Jammu. Following this the higher ups of the departments passed on the directions to their subordinate staff mostly comprising of officers to take up the 'assignment' seriously.
As such scores of officers of the departments that come under the minister were present for the reception at different places along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. While some of the officers crossed the Jawahar tunnel and reached Banihal for the reception, many others remained stationed at Qazigund to welcome the minister coming from Jammu.
"It seemed that a king was coming to his capital and as such the staff was duty bound to accord a warm reception to him. Officers could be seen lined up to welcome the minister and the cavalcade was greeted by officers much to their discomfort. In the present era when it being claimed that democracy had firm roots such an act is totally uncalled for and it is anarchic in nature," said sources.
Sources said that officers had come from distant and far off places like Kupwara to accord welcome to their minister. They added that absence of the officers would have meant reprisal from the minister and as such the officers decided to play safe with their career and that they are in the good books of the minister.
"The officers had not thought that they would be directed to welcome the minister while he was on way to Srinagar from Jammu. They did so more out of the fear of reprisal rather than as an act of duty. The officers feared that they would land in trouble in case they did not turn up for the reception of the minister and as such were present there," said sources.
